New to Streaming: September 2019

With thousands of titles offered by streaming services, it can be aggravating to spend so much time looking for something interesting to watch. Even worse, you risk choosing a movie you end up hating because it had an intriguing description or preview.

Another issue with having so many choices is movies you would be interested in often do not show up in your recommended list. Here are some highly-rated movies from a wide variety of genres you can watch right now.

Netflix:

American Psycho (2000)

“American Psycho” is one of the best dark comedies ever made. Christian Bale stars as Patrick Bateman, the role which shot him from early 90s child star to modern-day method acting sensation. Bateman is a 1980s Wall Street investment banker, a seemingly normal guy. At night, though, he commits a series of increasingly violent murders. The humor mainly comes from Bateman’s lame yuppie lifestyle and vapid thoughts (heard through narration) contrasted with the absurdly over-the-top murders. It is one of those movies which opens itself up to a variety of interpretations. It definitely is not a movie for everyone, but it has built up a large cult audience over the years. I can guarantee you will never look at business cards the same way again.

Hulu:

Evil Dead 1 and 2

These are a couple of great horror comedies. They can also be enjoyed as straight horror movies if the comedic sections are not all that funny to certain people. Director Sam Raimi is able to set a spooky tone almost effortlessly. There are some really great visual effects here too.

Ocean’s 11

Just a great, fun-to-watch heist movie with a fantastic cast.

The Matrix

“The Matrix” is a highly influential 1999 sci-fi action movie still loved by audiences today. I am personally not a huge fan of the film, but I am very much in the minority on that. It is one of those movies you kind of need to see because of how often it is referenced.

Unbreakable

The premise of “Unbreakable” is this—what if Superman was real, but did not know he was Superman? It is probably the most realistic superhero movie ever made.

Pretty in Pink

One of the many iconic 80s teen movies by the revered John Hughes, “Pretty in Pink” is a very entertaining romantic comedy/drama. The characters in this movie feel like they could be real people, and the way they play off each other feels natural. It really has not aged that much with the exception of the fashion trends shown.

Amazon Prime:

Boy

From Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and voice of Korg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Boy” is a comedy with some drama thrown in.  It tells the story of a young boy in 1984 rural New Zealand as his father returns after abandoning him years ago. The boy is forced to accept the brave hero he imagined is a far cry from who his father actually is. With endearing characters and charming presentation, I would recommend “Boy” to anyone.

Rango

A beautifully animated western/adventure/comedy, Rango is full of creativity. Johnny Depp gives one of my favorite voice acting performances as the titular character. It can come across as weird to some audience members, but I see it more as charming. Whichever side you end up on, I do not think anybody would call Rango boring.
