A big furry beast living in a castle, talking candlesticks, dancing forks, and teapots singing will be in the spotlight for this year’s homecoming musical, Beauty and the Beast.
Charlotte Hamil, director of calling and career, holds the role of director for this year’s musical. The role was offered to her after her history as a theater girl surfaced.
“I started at the age of four, and it’s always been a part of my life, even though I have this professional side of owning a home health,” Hamil said. “Before I arrived at OC, I was assistant choir director at Durant High School, and I directed our spring show called Broadway Lights”.
In the decision process of choosing the musical theme for this year the 75 anniversary of Oklahoma Christian was a factor.
“Well, it’s the 75 anniversary so we wanted a really big show, something that is well known. The message behind Beauty and the Beast is so great, it’s really about the beauty within and really embracing one another,” Hamil said. “We wanted something big for the big anniversary”.
Senior, Madeline Lewis who plays the role of Belle shares what she is most excited about in the musical.
“I know that a lot of kids in the audience are going to love it, and they’re going to just be awed by all the characters and by Belle and by the Beast,” Lewis said. “It’s just going to be really sweet to watch, so I’m most excited for the interaction between the audience”.
Playing a lead role such as Belle comes with a lot of responsibility. Lewis explains
“Belle’s kind of a complicated character, I guess I didn’t realize it going into it. She’s kind of dramatic, but she also stands up for who she loves and one of those things is her father and towards the end, the beast,” Lewis said. “I’ve had to research and dig into a little bit more, but it’s been fun.”
Hamil, as she watches the students grow into their characters, explained the creation process behind the costumes.
“It’s really neat to see each of the students own little personalities show up through their character and how they’ve created that character to be their own,” Hamil said. “The creation process of them really studying and figuring out how to deliver that line or how would the beast move, or how would Gaston pose in this way”.
The cast is doing a new event called Tea Time with Belle at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26 in the Garvey Conservatory.
“If you know a young person in your life, they can come and have story time with Belle, we’ll have a sing along and all the characters will be there in full costume,” Hamil said. “There’ll be lots of fun photo opportunities and will give kids a chance to interact with the cast. ”The showing of The Beauty and the
Beast will be at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.. Free admission will be available to students for the first showing on Oct. 31.
