After the long, tiring hours Spring Sing took up, Oklahoma Christian students were ready for a break. Whether they traveled far to a new place, went home to see family or stayed here on campus, the free week was much needed.
Freshman Lily Saylor shared what she did this spring break.
“I had a really fun spring break,” Saylor said. “I went to McAllen, TX, with the Edmond Church of Christ college ministry. There were a lot of us who went; we mostly helped build or fix things, and some people helped put on a VBS for the kids.”
Both the youth group and the college ministry at Edmond Church of Christ attend the McAllen mission trip every year. They lend helping hands to the locals by aiding with repairs, playing with kids and spreading the love of Jesus.
Lily described her favorite memory from the trip.
“Definitely my favorite part of the whole trip was playing spades with my friend, Brandi,” Saylor said. “We were put into a spades tournament, and we ended up winning the championship. I already miss it; I felt like I was really making a difference.”
While some people remained busy over spring break, others relaxed and took in every second. Sophomore Olivia Hampton, an RA in the Gunn Henderson dorms, used her week off to recover and rest.
“For Spring break, I went to Branson, MO, for a couple of days and spent time looking at the lake and doing puzzles,” Hampton said. “I then stayed at my house for the rest of the break.”
Besides relaxing and spending time with her family, Hampton said she also looked over her schoolwork.
“I did have music assignments due, and although I did not have anything due for my science classes, I still tried to study for them,” Hampton said.
Sometimes, spring break involves seeing family you do not usually visit. Samuel Harris, a junior computer science major, spent his spring break in Tulsa, OK, with his grandparents.
“I spent time with my grandparents. I did lots of puzzles with them and mostly just talked to my granny and grandpa,” Harris said. “That was probably my favorite part, just talking to them, and getting closer to my dad’s side of the family.”
When Samuel was not spending time with his loved ones, he was working on homework and finishing up assignments due the week after spring break.
“I really just had homework for my computer science classes,” Harris said. “And for my English paper, I did some revisions. Well, a lot of revisions.”
With just five weeks left in the semester, it is crunch time for Oklahoma Christian students. Spring break served as the well-deserved rest and reset for the students’ minds as they prepare for long hours of studying to come.
