Princess Fiona took some time off from her royal duties to have tea with her young admirers during homecoming weekend.

Young theatergoers spent time with Princess Fiona and other “Shrek” characters, the Sugarplum Fairy and Gingy, on Nov. 5-7 before showings of “Shrek the Musical.”

“This went on for ‘Beauty and the Beast’ a couple years ago, and we haven’t done it since then,” Amanda Smith, the organizer of Tea with Princess Fiona said. “So we decided since ‘Shrek’ is kind of a princess show it would be good for us to do again.”

For $10, each child sat at a table and was provided with coloring sheets while sipping “swamp punch” and nibbling “gingy cookies.”

Along with snacks and coloring, the children listened to Princess Fiona perform “I Know It’s Today,” a song from the musical, and had the opportunity to visit with Princess Fiona, the Sugarplum Fairy and Gingy. After they finished their treats, each child was able to take a selfie with Shrek.

Corrine Roybal brought her granddaughter to Tea with Princess Fiona and said the event was enjoyable to watch.

“The best part is just watching the kids’ faces and seeing their reactions,” Roybal said. “That’s what makes it so fun, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Sam Arter and Abby Winn, ages nine and eleven, were two of Fiona’s fans that attended the tea party, and they said they were excited to see Fiona because they love who she is.

“Fiona has a very big heart,” Winn said. “She realizes she has a big heart when she turns into her ogre self, and she helps Shrek to know whenever he is an ogre that he has a good heart too.”

Oklahoma Christian University freshman Rebecca Luby, the teenage Fiona in “Shrek, the Musical,” along with Kennedy Vanover who plays the child Fiona, both made an appearance at the tea party. Luby and Vanover agreed that Tea with Princess Fiona was a worthwhile event, not only for the kids, but also for themselves.

“All the children are just so pumped up and so ready when they see the characters,” Vanover said. “It’s just so exciting for the children, but it’s also exciting for us.”

At the end of the tea each girl was given a princess tiara, and each boy received green felt Shrek ears as souvenirs.

“This type of event creates a lot of excitement about the musical,” Smith said. “It brings a lot more people in who might not necessarily bring their young children into a show like this.”
