After Psychology Professor Tina Winn was diagnosed with breast cancer last semester, the psychology department took it upon themselves to raise money and awareness for her and the cause.
“They rallied behind Dr. Winn and supported her and I know she took a lot of comfort in that,” Ryan Newell, chair of the Department of Psychology and Family Studies, said.
Typically, the Psych Club hosts a magic show, starring Newell, to raise money for their club. Last semester, they decided to send the proceeds to a different cause.
With the ticket sales, the club also made t-shirts in support of Winn and sold concessions at intermission during the magic show. Winn’s former social service club, Gamma Rho, also helped finance and sell the t-shirts.
Now, Winn is in recovery. The Psych Club raised $1,540 to go toward breast cancer research in her name.
“It’s a relief, actually,” Newell said. “It’s just good to see our students getting involved… it’s not a million dollars, but I think it points out that our students are concerned with things that are broader than what is happening here.”
Psych Club plans on hosting another magic show this coming March. Proceeds will benefit Down syndrome in support of psychology and family studies professor Bobby Kern’s son. For more information on dates, watch student announcements.
