Robert Troester to Speak at “Young Americans for Freedom” Event

Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) is a conservative value youth organization founded on the mission to make sure an “increasing numbers of young Americans understand and are inspired by the ideas of individual freedom, a strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values.”

The Oklahoma Christian University chapter of YAF was founded in the spring of 2018 by then-sophomore Abigail Kent and junior Emily Sarani. They have already planned multiple events, including one this evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Adams Recital Hall.

The event will include a lecture from Robert Troester, a United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

“Young Americans for Freedom is a national organization that emphasizes what is usually connected to conservative values,” Kent said. “It’s a lot more about the principles behind those values as opposed to the policies themselves.”

Kent said YAF differs from other activist groups, primarily because they do not associate with one specific political party.

“It differs from College Republicans or College Democrats,” Kent said. “Those are more political-affiliated organizations. We more focus on the values and the principles behind the policies. That is one thing that makes YAF very unique and appealing to me, being someone who doesn’t want to always affiliate with a political group but wants to uphold those values.”

Last semester, Kent helped organize YAF’s first event, which was headlined by KrisAnne Hall, founder of Liberty First University. Hall talked about topics covering the importance of the American Constitution.

“KrisAnne Hall is more of an independent individual,” Kent said. “She has started something called Liberty First University, which is more of her take on American history.”

During tonight’s lecture, Troester is set to talk about religious liberty and how the justice system plays a crucial role in preserving liberty.

“I’m excited to see him educate students on what role the justice system plays in our lives,” Kent said. “It’s very easy to see what the legislative branch does, it’s Congress. Same with the executive branch—the president. Those are usually very easily understood. But a lot less is known, understood and cared about regarding the judicial branch, and I’m excited to hear what he’s going to say and how he rallies people around a lesser-known branch of government.”

Serving as First Assistant U.S Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma, Troester has served on numerous committees, including the Attorney General Advisory Committee from 2005-2007, where he was appointed by the Attorney General. On the committee, he served as Vice-Chair of the Healthcare Fraud Working Group, Vice-Chair of the Civil Rights Subcommittee and Chair of the Executive Office of US Attorneys (EOUSA) IT Investment Review Board.

The event, titled “Liberty and Justice,” will take place tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Adams Recital Hall. This event is Kudos approved.
