Rushing Into Social Service Clubs

On August 12, 2022, Oklahoma Christian University held their annual Club Night to kick off the rush events.

During this night, the nine social clubs on campus are introduced to the sophomore and transfer students interested in rushing.

After Club Night, the clubs will invite students interested in rushing to participate in different events they put on. This gives rushees a chance to meet and learn about the clubs offered on campus so they can discover the right fit for them.

“It’s just such a fun time to meet new people,” Lilly Hester, Gamma Rho rush director said. “Even if they don’t rush your club, you still get to meet them and make new friends.”

Being a part of social clubs gives students the opportunity to participate in school-hosted events throughout the year. These events include Spring Sing, intramurals, and homecoming, among others. Along with these events, clubs also create an on campus community for students to be a part of.

“Clubs are a great way to meet like-minded people,” Daniel Billingsley, the Alpha Gamma Omega rush director said. “You become brothers.”

For students interested in rushing, such as Sophomore Surafel Sharp, finding a club is not just about intramurals and Spring Sing. Rather, it is also about finding a group to grow closer to God with.

“I’m looking for a good community of guys who will help strengthen my faith,” Sharpe said.

Other students, like Sophomore Yasmin Orellana, believe rush is about finding a place to be yourself.

“I want to find my second home,” Orellana said. “[A place] where I can feel like myself.”

During rush week, each club assigns two of its members to be rush directors. Their job is to plan the events and tell potential rushees about their club. With all the chaos of rush season, rush directors would like to offer up a bit of advice for those rushing.

Josiah Burns, rush director of Chi Lambda Phi, said it is important to rush the club you connect and fit in with.

“Don’t rush a club just because it’s where your friends are going,” Burns said. “Find the community that’s best for you.”

Hailey Toth, rush director for Theta Theta Theta, said it’s important to give each club a chance and go to as many events as you can.

“Every club has so much to offer,” Toth said. “Definitely just feel it out and go to as much as you can.”

The fall 2022 rush season will end on September 9th with the annual Induction Night, where rushes will be choosing their clubs and new families. Rush calendars can be found on each club’s social media.
