The Student Government Association met for the third senate meeting of the semester on Aug. 31. Their discussion focused on ways to involve the freshmen class in SGA activities, changes to be made around campus, the upcoming organization fair and other events.
In an effort to reach out to the freshman class, SGA discussed ideas to better involve and guide the freshmen towards leadership opportunities. This included talk of a meet and greet for freshmen only and SGA leading freshmen chapel.
Another focus of the meeting was on how to civilly discuss hot topics relating to the student body. A town hall style discussion was presented. This would feature students presenting questions or concerns which SGA would strive to address and find solutions to. Through this civil discourse, the university could spark change.
The meeting also mentioned upcoming events. LASO (Latin American Student Organization) is hosting Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 – Oct. 15. An educational event will be held on Sept. 26 along with an annual campus-wide event on Oct. 3, featuring hispanic food, clothes and games. EHI shared their event list as well. There will be a pickleball hangout with snacks provided on Sept. 15, 6-8 p.m., an annual cornhole tournament with pizza and prizes on Oct. 6, 6-8 p.m. and a service project to create care packages for the homeless.
Eagle Eye will be hosting an Organization Fair at the Student Center Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All departmental organizations across campus will have their own table with information on how to get involved. There will be many different stations to choose from so each individual can find what works for them and what sparks their interest.
