Oklahoma Christian University’s Language and Literature department is currently looking for freshman students to get involved with Soundings, by providing them real-world, internship experience.
Interns will work in a variety of areas, including public relations, marketing, graphic design, writing and social media management.
“The internships are a great way to get résumé credit, and to learn what being part of a publication might look like in the real world,” Junior Lisa Pergi, Sounding’s administrative director, said.
Soundings, a literary and visual arts journal, has been a creative outlet for Oklahoma Christian students for decades. Published in association with Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honors society, Soundings is staffed entirely by students, who raise money for the publishing of the journal every year. Because the staff pays to have the journal printed, it is available for free to the student body.
With professor of English Nathan Shank as its faculty advisor, Soundings operates out of the language and literature department, but its staff comes from a variety of backgrounds and majors. Every member of the staff helps plan events for the journal, from raising funds and awareness through bake sales to the annual Unveiling, a publication party held in April to reveal the newest edition of the journal.
For Pergi, the journal exists to encourage and showcase all kinds of creative minds at Oklahoma Christian.
“We support new works of art by faculty, alumni and students, and we publish a wide variety of things,” Pergi said. “That’s why we’re a literary and visual arts journal. We accept critical essays, poetry, prose and all forms of visual arts that can be printed in the journal and music submissions to be played at our unveiling.”
Senior Karina Aguayo, the journal’s social media administrator, is currently working to connect with Soundings’ audience through social media. Sophomore Kellen Welch is preparing to kick off this year’s blog, which can be found on the Soundings website. Graphic designers, junior Ruth Miller and senior Van Nguyen, are designing new merchandise for the journal. Junior Lisa Pergi, the administrative director, is working with senior editor Sheila Ellis to involve the community with Soundings.
Journal submissions will open this winter, but until then, there are other ways students can get involved with Soundings. The journal’s blog is looking for guest writers, and students of all classifications and majors are encouraged to contribute. Blog posts need to be about language, literature, words or similar subjects.
Soundings can be found online and on social media @ocsoundings. Aguayo said she encourages students to follow the journal to keep up with events and submission deadlines.
For more information about the blog or the journal itself, students can email soundings@oc.edu. Applications for the freshman internship are open until Oct. 4.
