Spring career fair to host more than 40 employers, graduate schools

Oklahoma Christian University students have the opportunity to meet with more than 40 employers and graduate schools at the Day Six spring career, internship and grad school fair. The annual fair, Oklahoma Christian’s biggest on-campus recruiting event, will take place tomorrow, Feb. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the McIntosh Conservatory.

“One thing I want to drive home is that this is open to students of all majors and all years,” Director of Calling and Career Susan Hoover said. “It’s just as beneficial for freshmen to attend to begin to make industry connections and find out what jobs and internships are available to them.”

Confirmed employers for this year’s fair include Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores, MidFirst Bank, Niagara Bottling, Paycom and Boeing. Graduate schools include Northeastern State University, the University of Central Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist University. For a full list of employers and graduate schools, students can visit Day Six’s website.

“For freshmen and sophomores, it’s critical to start making those connections for internships early, because they will become acquainted with companies they’d like to pursue, their application deadlines and ask around about other students’ experiences there,” Hoover said. “For juniors and seniors who might have had internships already, it’s great to look at other opportunities to gain experience, whether it be another internship or finding out about full-time opportunities available to your major.”

Hoover said she has witnessed student success at previous career fairs, something she hopes will encourage student participation at tomorrow’s event.

“There was a student who just graduated in December and met his employer at the fall 2018 career fair, established a connection, followed up with them, did a phone interview, an on-campus interview and ultimately received a job offer before he graduated,” Hoover said. “The student made a good impression, was enthusiastic about the opportunity and ultimately that set him apart from other candidates.”

According to Hoover, students can prepare for this year’s fair by bringing 10-15 copies of their up-to-date resume and their student ID to check-in. Attire is business professional, with examples available on the Handshake website. Hoover said it is also important to have a 30-second pitch ready to share, which includes a student’s name, major, graduation date and why they decided to attend the fair.

“I think career fairs are important to hold because it shows students what opportunities are available to them that maybe they didn’t know existed,” Hoover said. “In the classroom, it’s hard for professors to list every type of job each major can have—and there are so many—so I think this can expose students to possibilities they didn’t know about.

“Students should attend the career fair because it’s a great opportunity to learn about what’s available to them without even leaving campus. They’ll also have the chance to network with employers and practice the many skills needed in an interview.”

Students can register for the fair online.
