Spring visit gives prospective students “thorough look at a day in the life of an Eagle”

The admissions office is hosting prospective students on campus this weekend to give them an idea of what the Oklahoma Christian University experience entails. The annual Spring Visit kicked off last night with a Merit Scholarship Celebration for accepted students, and today, the guests’ day began with a complimentary breakfast.

According to Spring Visit coordinator Kayla Goodrich, prospective students will get the opportunity to attend an activities fair, which features student life and co-curricular groups on campus, as well as an academic fair.

“The academic fair allows students to visit with a number of departments,” Goodrich said. “Following the academic fair, we have an academic department showcase, allowing students to get more in-depth information about the departments that interest them.”

Goodrich said Spring Visit allows guests to see Oklahoma Christian from all angles, connecting potential students and their families with what their college experience might look like.

“Prospective students get to meet with our outstanding faculty, interact with current students and attend long-standing traditions like Big Chapel and Spring Sing,” Goodrich said. “This event is perfect for our admitted seniors to finalize their plans for the fall, as well as provide high school juniors with a great first look at what OC has to offer. By showcasing academic departments, student life activities and one of OC’s favorite productions, Spring Sing, we provide a thorough look at a day in the life of an Eagle.”

Admissions counselor Elizabeth Henderson said the event takes several months of planning because of how much work that goes into it behind the scenes.

“All the cooperation we get from everyone on campus does not go unnoticed,” Henderson said. “From the students who open up their dorm room for visitors to stay in, to the faculty who take time to present information about their department and meet with the visiting students, it is a true team effort. I love that our community takes ownership for our visitors and is so passionate about showing such wonderful hospitality.”

Henderson said it is crucial for high school students to visit campuses they are interested in to see if they can envision themselves there.

“Some students surprise themselves by discovering they really love the smaller, close-knit campus at a place like OC,” Henderson said. “Spring Visit is great because, to me, Spring Sing weekend is like a second homecoming weekend. Campus is buzzing and alive, and the excitement is tangible. I really love for visitors to get to witness that.”

Prospective student and high school junior Austin Hagood said location is one primary reason he is considering attending Oklahoma Christian, both because of its distance from his hometown of Comanche, TX, as well as the leisurely activities it offers.

“I think that it is a good distance from home, without being too far away,” Hagood said. “Edmond has a lot of restaurants and places to shop without it being too big.”

Hagood said he is considering majoring in either computer science or public relations but has yet to decide on a university to attend.

“It has been challenging to determine which college I should be going to after I graduate in the future,” Hagood said. “Since I have family at OC, I thought attending Spring Visit would be a good experience. I am excited to look around the campus again, seeing what all OC has to offer and to meet some other people my age who might someday be my classmates.”
