The Talon’s Guide to Spring Sing 2020

With hours of preparation under their belts, hundreds of Oklahoma Christian University students will put their acts on display in tonight’s opening performance of Spring Sing. The student-produced musical has become a staple in university culture and acts as one of the campus’s most anticipated events of the year.

With “2020 Vision” headlining as the overall theme, assistant director Emily Cochran wants the performances “to be as different as possible,” allowing clubs to diversify their acts. Going into the show, club directors were asked to choose a theme loosely connected to the underlining subject.

To help students, alumni and campus guests prepare for the 52nd Spring Sing show, the Talon has put together the following information on each club’s performance:

Club Name: Delta Gamma Sigma

Spring Sing Theme: Bad Referees

Directors: Kellen Rowe and Aaron Parrott

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme is Bad Referees, and we picked it knowing that Delta could get behind and have the energy for it. We love our sports in Delta, and it fits with the overall theme well.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited about your club’s performance?

“The audience should be excited for the Delta show because it is always entertaining and it will be a little bit different from everybody else’s. There are a few new things that we are trying out this year that a lot of people seem to like at club night and I’m excited for the whole audience to see it this weekend.”

Q: What sets Delta apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“We always have 5th place on lock and nobody else can take that away from us. Delta is entertaining. Delta is funny. And Delta is easy on the eyes.”

Club Name: Iota Kappa Phi

Spring Sing Theme: Lilo and Stitch

Directors: Canaan Burkett and Hannah Siebold

Club Name: Chi Lambda Phi

Spring Sing Theme: Zombies

Directors: Jacob Knox and Adam Lair

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme this year is zombies. Jacob Knox, the co-director, and I were texting back and forth trying to think of a good theme and I just said, ‘Zombies?’ It started as a joke, but the more we thought about it, the more excited we got, and we started writing the show that night.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“The audience should be excited about our show because it’s a blast for us to perform, and it will be just as fun to watch. We worked very hard this year picking a theme that’s never been done before and creating new moves and formations, so it will be exciting to watch.”

Q: What sets Chi apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“Our mindset. We love Spring Sing, and we love doing our best to create a show we can be proud of. We aren’t focused on having a perfect show, we are just doing our best. When the focus is no longer on perfection, it makes it so much more fun to practice and perform. And when we can have so much fun doing our best for each other, it becomes a perfect show. Not to say that we don’t make mistakes, but we have a show that we did our best in and that we can be proud of.”

Club Name: Theta Theta Theta

Spring Sing Theme: Aliens and Astronauts

Directors: Avery Black and Shelby Remling

Club Name: Psi Epsilon

Spring Sing Theme: Farmers

Directors: Devin Sikes

Club Name: Phi Omega Nu

Spring Sing Theme: Park Rangers

Directors: Ripley Martin and Taylor Glover

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme is Park Rangers, and it wasn’t the first thing that came to mind. We were throwing out themes left and right, all vastly different than the others, and chose Park Rangers because we knew we could write a really fun show off of that. We wanted something original and lighthearted, and I think we’ve delivered.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“The show is relatable to everyone, and I think that’s what makes the audience excited about Spring Sing. We have opportunities for the audience to get involved in the show, which is something to look forward to.”

Q: What sets Phi apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“What sets us apart is that we have so much fun doing our show. We work hard, but every single one of us loves the show we’re putting on stage, and I think that enthusiasm comes through in our performance.”

Club Name: Kappa Sigma Tau

Spring Sing Theme: Mailmen

Directors: Jacob Elmore and Jordan Santos

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme is Mailmen this year. We chose that theme because like the happy mailman who is going to get your package to you no matter snow or rain or shine, Kappa is always looking to serve with a smile on our faces.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“The reason that people should be excited about our show is that it’s fun, cheery and we make the everyday life of a mailman seem like an adventure and a completely different vibe than what the past couple of Kappa shows have been.”

Q: What sets Kappa apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“One thing that I would say sets Kappa apart from the other clubs in Spring Sing is that we don’t have to play into our characters that much. We get to be what Kappa is and that is happy, smiling and energetic guys. In the past years of Kappa, Spring Sing has always had the song “Already Gone” in their show. That song puts us apart from everyone else because it’s exclaiming who Kappa is and a part of our history.”

Club Name: Alpha Gamma Omega

Spring Sing Theme: Bob Ross

Directors: Samuel Hoelk and Christian Reyes

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme is the legendary oil painter Bob Ross. We weren’t sold on Bob Ross to begin with because we were unsure of how it would connect with the crowd. Shortly after the initial discussion, I realized how big Bob Ross had gotten in the last few years and started coming up with ideas for the show and presented them to Sam. Mind you, this was still before the announcement of the overall theme and once we found that out, we decided it would work. Alpha tries for a cool and calm demeanor, much like the painter himself.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“Some of the most exciting moments of our show come in the form of lyrics and the simplicity of our show. I also think after a few years of hammering on unnecessary props and over-complicated formations, we are bringing a different kind of Alpha show to the stage, and I’m proud of that. We have put a lot of time and thought into how we would make the crowd go, ‘Wow, that’s Alpha?’ We also have a classic Alpha move set returning this year, so be looking for that.”

Q: What sets Alpha apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“I think we are set apart by our size, but also set apart by the might of the men we have on stage. They’ve all given 150% to this show and truly make our small club look and sound big. I am so grateful for Alpha and what they’ve given to our show. We also just have a lot of fun out there, and that shows.”

Club Name: Gamma Rho

Spring Sing Theme: Little Bo Peep and Her Sheep

Directors: Olivia Bryant and Jewel Loya

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“The women of Gamma Rho chose the theme Little Bo Peep and Her Sheep because we think it is truly representative of Gamma. Gamma is a sisterhood of Christ-followers—‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.’ Our show tells the story of a girl who loses her sheep until they both see that they clearly can’t live life without each other.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“Gamma is a performing club. We love all things showbiz. Lights, glitter and costumes. The audience should be excited about our performance because our show is high energy and clean. We tell our girls to find one person in the crowd and perform to that specific person, so I truly believe we captivate the audience.”

Q: What sets Gamma apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“The poms we use this year is what will set us apart from other clubs. Our opener, second song and can-can are where they make their appearance. But the can-can brings a wow factor that no one will be expecting.”

Club Name: Freshmen

Spring Sing Theme: Chick-fil-A

Directors: Brittney McKnight and Tristan Brussard

Q: Why did you select this theme?

“Our theme is Chick-fil-A. Before we picked this, we were struggling to come up with a theme, but we were shown a high school dance video and that sparked the idea. We see Chick-fil-A as a place where you can see your family eating in the future, or a place you could work, and just a wholesome place in general.”

Q: Why should the audience get excited for your club’s performance?

“I think the audience should be excited for our show because it’s funny and everybody loves Chick-fil-A. Who doesn’t love a good chicken sandwich?”

Q: What sets the freshmen apart when it comes to Spring Sing?

“One thing that sets us apart is that we get the chance to have boys and girls in our show and utilize a different dynamic and see different characters come to life.”
