Things to do in OKC over fall break

While many Oklahoma Christian University students travel home or go on a short trip for fall break, others live too far away and prefer to stay on campus for the rest of the week. For those who remain in the Oklahoma City, OK area, there are several local activities taking place this week for students to attend.

The Midtown district of downtown Oklahoma City will hold its sixth Midtown Walkabout from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 20. Attendees can enjoy a free photo booth, live music, art demonstrations and bocce ball, among other activities. Midtown stores will provide discounts, in-store activities, promotions and giveaways, including complimentary snacks. A full list of promotions and discounts can be found online.

“Downtown OKC Partnership will be surprising a few lucky event attendees with gift cards from Midtown businesses as a part of ‘Midtown Acts of Kindness,’ which will serve as a thank you from the Midtown businesses for shopping in the district,” the downtown Oklahoma City website said.

Hosted by the Midtown Association and Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership, the event is free and open to the public to attend.

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) recently opened its newest exhibition, “Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement.” According to their website, OKCMOA is the first museum to present this traveling exhibition.

“The exhibition explores the ideas that preoccupied artists and critics at the time—the relationship between art and nature, questions of class and gender identity, the value of the handmade versus machine production and the search for beauty in an age of industry,” the website said.

Every month, the museum hosts Third Thursday with discounted ticket admission for $5 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The October theme is “Victorian Halloween” and will include a costume contest, prizes and “eerie art making.” For an addition $10, attendees can take a “Death and Torture Tour of Victorian Radicals” to see the newest exhibition with costumed tour guides.

For an immersive art experience, students can visit Factory Obscura’s newest project “BEYOND.” According to their website, Factory Obscura is an art collective hoping to bring people together through art and allow “the curiosity, love and beauty inside us all to awaken.”

Last November Factory Obscura opened “SHIFT,” a popular temporary art installation which challenged participants to physically explore a full-sensory environment.

“Our newest experience is a mystical odyssey that will lead you to the farthest corners of yourself,” their website said. “BEYOND will take visitors through the known, into the unknown, on an immersive art odyssey into what lies beyond. BEYOND includes four unique experiences hidden behind four doors.”

“BEYOND” will run through Dec. 21 and tickets are available as a one-day pass for $20 or an individual pass for $30, which includes unlimited entry for the full run of the installation.

Another recently acquired art installation downtown is Erwin Redl’s “Whiteout” in Campbell Art Park. Hundreds of suspended lights are animated in large-scale patterns and “the sequence of light is an incandescent treatment of urban public space across the dark seasons of the late fall and winter,” Visit OKC said. The installation will be open until the end of March.

For students interested in shopping, the State Fair Park will hold An Affair of the Heart Oct. 19-21. It is the largest arts, crafts and boutiques show in the state and includes everything from gourmet food to clothing and furniture from artists and craftsmen. Admission is $10 and reentry is allowed for all three days.
