Campus Spirit Committee Encourages Students’ Involvement in Sports Events

The campus spirit committee, one of eight committees in the Oklahoma Christian University Student Government Association, works to promote student interest in on-campus events.

Jonah Page and Josiah Burns are the co-chairs of the campus spirit committee. Page said the campus spirit committee is responsible for promoting students to go to events for the athletic and music departments.

“We both [Page and Burns] enjoy attending sports games and want to encourage others to go and make their time spent there more enjoyable,” Page said.

Page said the committee brainstorms ideas at weekly meetings and helps out with events the committee puts on. The committee’s goal is to improve spirit and involvement on campus.

The committee is trying to bring back some events that were canceled last year. In 2019, Oklahoma Christian worked with the campus spirit committee to hold more athletic events and support student athletes . The cheer program, which had ended during the 2016-2017 school year,  returned thanks to their hard work. However, COVID-19 the following year prevented on-campus events.

According to Page, they are working on some events that should improve sports-related passion and hype on campus. The main event the committee is working on now is Late Night Madness.

Late Night Madness kicks off the official start of basketball season and features the men and women’s basketball teams. Although homecoming  used to kicked off the basketball season, Oklahoma Christian introduced Late Night Madness in 2019 to increase student involvement.

Page also said the committee is working to bring back Nine Noises. Nine Noises was a past tradition of nine students who worked to hype up the crowd and lead chants during a basketball game. Paige said encouraging students is important, which Nine Noises should accomplish along with improving spirit on campus.

Kiva Maxwell, the SGA president,  said the SGA can help out with improving campus spirit by urging students to join athletic events.

“We’re coming out from a really hard year, and we can get together and watch basketball games [now],” Maxwell said. “I’m looking forward to supporting athletic programs this year.”

Page would like to welcome students to the campus spirit committee.

“If campus spirit or sports is something you’re interested in, you’re more than welcome to join our committee or talk to or email me with ideas,” Page said.

The campus spirit committee is trying to bring back athletic events and raise campus spirit this school year and they always welcome  students’ voices.
