On Tuesday nights at 7:30pm a student-led Bible study meets in the halls of Williams-Branch Center for Biblical Studies (WBC) at Oklahoma Christian University. A freshman heads up the Bible study, which is called Good News Tuesdays and focuses on the Bible rather than a worship setting. Students are flocking to meetings, including those living off-campus. The Talon spoke with Grace Burk, who commutes from 30 minutes away to attend the study.
“I’ve gone the past three times and I have really enjoyed it. I have a lot of respect for the group of guys who lead it because I’ve also been looking to meet more people who are like-minded. They have a box and some paper that you can write and prayers or any Biblical questions and they will answer the questions during our discussion. I am still getting to know everyone but I really do love going. It’s definitely worth the drive from home. I look forward to seeing how much this grows,” Burk said.
The leader for the group is Evan Lowe, a freshman communications major from Moore, Oklahoma. Lowe sat down with the Talon and discussed his background and role in starting the group.
“I was raised in a Christian family, and recently, about maybe four years ago, I had a moment in my life where I decided to go all in on my faith, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do ever since. I came to Oklahoma Christian, kind of looking to grow my faith and also to help other people grow their faith too,” Lowe said.
The idea started before Lowe even arrived on campus, but the name came much later. The heart of the name came from the goal of the group: to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
“I wanted to start a Bible study when I came here. That’s one of my goals this semester, and I had a few friends that I knew before. I contacted them about it and I met a few other people who were Bible majors and who were knowledgeable in the Bible, and we kind of came together… We have a meeting outside of the Bible study every week to kind of see what we can improve and stuff like that. It’s amazing to see how these people, we didn’t know each other a month ago, you know, and yet somehow we’re all brothers in Christ, and we’re all doing this to help spread good news on Oklahoma Christian’s campus,” Lowe said.
Currently, the group is reading through the gospel of Mark. The gospel was chosen because of the narrative of Jesus’s life. However, this selection was not the first pick in the beginning.
“We wanted to do Acts originally, but we chose Mark because it’s one of the Gospels. We had to make sure before we dove into deeper study, we should know who Jesus is and what Jesus did. It’s also a pretty short book of the Bible too so that was really appealing to us. We could start off with that first,” Lowe said.
The group is student-lead and student-driven. Starting on Sept. 1, 2026 the meeting saw attendance numbers of 23, which spiked to 41 the following week. Due to the rise in numbers, the group relocated rooms. Eventually, there are some goals for the group, Lowe described.
“We really want to make an impact on campus. We want to get people to ask questions about what they believe and why they believe it. So many people go through their lives without really questioning; they take what their preacher said or what their pastor said. We want people to know why they believe, from God’s word. We want people to know exactly what they believe too, and we want to know God’s word better,” Lowe said.
In closing, Lowe encouraged those on the fence about coming. No student is excluded and the space is for healthy growth in the Christian faith.
“It’s geared towards all the students. You know, in First Corinthians 9:22, Paul writes, ‘I become all things for all men’, and that’s what we’re really trying to do here. We’re trying to ask questions. We’re trying to pray about it. We’re trying to learn more together,” Lowe said.
