Oklahoma Christian University homecoming will be held Saturday, Nov. 7. Social clubs will be competing in multiple categories, one of which is the homeward social club competition. Each club has a unique homeward project goal for which they raise funds. For homecoming this year, each club has to raise a certain dollar percentage of the amount of club members they currently have in order to receive points toward their overall homecoming standing.
Hannah Johnson, annual giving coordinator, spoke about why homeward was chosen as this year’s homecoming philanthropy.
“Historically, for homecoming philanthropy, students will decide on a project together… it’s usually an on-campus project for homecoming. Last year was different because it was an off-campus project. Usually off-campus projects are at Spring Sing,” she said. “This year we decided to try doing homeward because each club has already chosen their own homeward project, so the goal was to get more buy-in from everyone,” said Johnson. “Homeward club competition is usually in the spring, sometime from January to March. This year we’re starting it early with homecoming, so it’s giving clubs more time to fundraise for their projects, more time to connect with their alumni,” she said.
According to the Oklahoma Christian homeward club competition site, the club passion projects are as follows:
Alpha Gamma Omega – Alpha Knights Treasury
Beta Beta Sigma – The Beta Fund
Chi Lambda Phi – Adam Langford Scholarship
Delta Gamma Sigma – Delta Scholarships
Freshman – Freshman Mission Fund
Gamma Rho – Gamma Mission Award and Special Projects
Kappa Sigma Tau – Kappa Mission and Service Fund
Lambda Chi Zeta – Lambda Chi Zeta Mission Scholarship
Theta Theta Theta – John Thompson Scholarship
Annie Waggoner, a senior majoring in nursing, talked about her role with homeward during homecoming.
“I think that it is different in a good way this year. It gives each club a longer amount of time to participate and it is a great way to help the alumni feel included throughout the homecoming process. It is helpful that the alumni can donate towards a good cause and that they know it makes a big impact on the school and their former club,” said Waggoner. “Since I am Lambda’s alumni relations officer, it is my job to communicate with the alumni and organize our fundraising. With the help of the officer team and the rest of the club, we work together and fundraise the best that we can and no matter what, it always creates a big impact,” she said.
Donations are open to anyone who would like to contribute, and can be made at the Oklahoma Christian homeward club competition site: (https://give.oc.edu/campaign/homeward-club-competition/c811068).
