Golf enthusiasts rejoice – Top Golf is coming to Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City is the 16th city for Top Golf, and its smallest market location. The new golf entertainment complex will be located near Quail Springs Mall.
Oklahoma Christian University Head Men’s Golf Coach David Lynn said the new Top Golf facility would boost the local economy.
“It will bring jobs, it will bring economic development in the community,” Lynn said. “I hope that Top Golf will bring exposure too; that I think is great, and I think a lot of people will generally rush over because they don’t either have the amount of time that it takes to compete in golf or play golf, or they don’t have the money. So hopefully Top Golf will expose people to golf that normally wouldn’t get to do it otherwise.”
Lynn said that Top Golf would bring 30-40 full-time jobs and a number of part-time jobs.
“Any time they can bring that amount of jobs into an area, I know that’s good for the community,” Lynn said.
Lynn didn’t know the exact revenues, but anticipated more people will be exposed to golf and that itself will bring more money into the community.
“I know it’s been a very successful model in Houston and Dallas,” Lynn said. “I know they don’t have anything like that in Oklahoma currently. Top Golf I think is unique in a sense that they combine the social aspect of gathering in an inexpensive way to expose someone in the community to golf and the social aspect.”
Lynn said Top Golf would be the place to bridge the gap between veteran players and players new to the sport.
“Hopefully it will bring more people to the game,” Lynn said. “Top Golf will have the ability to put a group of people together; allow them to not only participate in golf but also to share food, be social in a way that’s not going to cost and absorb a lot of money like maybe going to the golf course.”
Junior Alyssa Schneider said that Top Golf would be good place to get started in the sport.
“A lot of people will be interested in it because they’ll want to get better at golf and to get competitive with it,” Schneider said.
Schneider comes from a family that plays golf and has had more experience with the sport than most.
“[Top Golf] is a very inexpensive way to learn how to play golf,” Schneider said. “There’s a lot of professional golfers that will teach you how to play golf, but those are expensive and hard to get into.”
Top Golf is scheduled to open within the next 15 months, according to Lynn.
Senior Brady Ross anticipates Top Golf becoming a local hotspot.
“I think it will provide jobs, I think it will provide money,” Ross said. “I think it will be a great place for people to go to hang out with their friends. I think that it will be good even for people who don’t play golf to get excited about.”
The construction of Top Golf is another development in Oklahoma City’s continued growth.
“I think there are maybe five or six [Top Golfs] in Texas, but that’s about it, so having a Top Golf will set OKC apart from other cities that don’t have one yet,” Ross said.
