SGA committee reports, funding requests

The Student Government Association (SGA) met last night to review committee reports and vote on funding requests.

In other actions, Team OC requested $3,000 from the SGA to help fund the student cost for the Holiday Hustle. The 5k/10k fundraising event helps to provide additional money for Team OC to better the fitness experience for students. The total cost for the event is approximately $12,000.

Committee Chair Seth Parker spoke on behalf of the Academics committee. The committee plans to create a safe place for students to discuss their academic complaints and needs. Parker said the formation of an academic advisory council is in the works.

Vice President and Chair of the Activities committee Taylor Dotson spoke about “Eagles in Paradise” to take place next week. This new version of “date week,” will feature a series of free events for students in and out of relationships.

The SGA voted to approve both funding requests for the Baja and aerodynamics teams. According to SGA Treasurer and Appropriations committee chair Hunter Cabe, the SGA had a total of $9,000 to spend this semester.

The Campus Spirit committee plans to rejuvenate the student section this year by bringing back Flight Club. This will allow students to get discounts at restaurants surrounding campus for attending sports games.

Dotson also presented a proposal to reduce housing restrictions for students. The SGA executives will present this proposal to administration soon.

In announcements, the women’s basketball team will face the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) next Tuesday at UCO. The athletic department will pay for students to attend. Additionally, homecoming shirts are on sale in the SGA office for $10.

Multicultural night will take place next Saturday at 6 p.m. in Hardeman Auditorium. Aside from performances and fellowship, students will provide food from their home countries.
