Sophomore pitcher Shea Coats is familiar with threes – the number of pitches she often has to throw to retire a batter, and the maximum number of batters she often sees in an inning. Coats became acquainted with an additional trio recently: the number of awards she won in a single week.

Coats was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Division II National Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday, the highest honor of her collegiate career.

“I’m beyond grateful for everything,” Coats said. “But to me, this is hands down a team award.”

Earlier in the week Coats received the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week award for the fifth time and the National Christian College Athletic Association Student-Athlete of the Week award in softball for the sixth time.

According to Coats, her success this season is only possible with support on the field and in the dugout.

“There is no way that a pitcher can ever receive an award such as this without an excellent team and coaching staff standing with them,” Coats said.

No Oklahoma Christian University pitcher has previously won an NFCA weekly honor in Division II of the NCAA.

Coats said she valued the encouragement from fans, teammates and coaches through this season.

“I’m so appreciative of their support on and off the field,” Coats said.
