Eagles and Lady Eagles drop two in opening games

The Oklahoma Christian University men’s basketball team traveled to Wichita, KS to compete in the Heartland–Lone Star Challenge and fell in their opening game, 70-61 in overtime to Texas A&M University–Commerce.

The Eagles had 20 turnovers in the game and shot just 34.4 percent from the field in the loss.

Senior Elijah Strickland led Oklahoma Christian with 19 points and pulled in six rebounds in 42 minutes in the game.

In the final seconds, Strickland missed a 17-foot, potential game-winning shot before the game went into overtime.

Junior Jordan Box scored 15 points and had three steals, and junior Roderick Smith had 14 points and eight rebounds.

In his first official game since transferring from Oklahoma State University, junior Will Lienhard posted four points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

In their second game of the tournament, the Eagles lost to Cameron University 80-69 behind an 11-1 run in the final minutes of the game.

Box led the team in points with 14 and added five rebounds, Strickland had 12 points and six rebounds and freshman Sebastien Davet chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Lienhard got his first start and put up 11 points, 10 rebounds—including eight offensive—and three blocks for his first career double-double.

The Eagles outrebounded the Aggies 34-27, but were outshot behind the arc as Cameron posted a 47.8 shooting percentage from three-point range compared to Oklahoma Christian’s 35 percent.

Lienhard was awarded the Eagle of the Week award Sunday following his performances against Texas A&M–Commerce and Cameron. He leads the Heartland Conference in blocks with eight through the first week.

For the Lady Eagles, they fell 96-95 to a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game against Cameron University.

Oklahoma Christian mounted a 14-point comeback entering the fourth quarter and took the lead, 93-92, with 35 seconds left in the game.

Sophomore Megan Shelton led the team with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and five rebounds.

Four other players scored in double figures for the Lady Eagles, including junior Addy Clift who had 17 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Junior Carolyne Lawley had 14 points, senior Audrey Hayes had 14 points and two blocks and freshman Delyssa Miller came off the bench to add 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Following their loss to Cameron, the Lady Eagles lost 72-68 to Midwestern State University after another fourth-quarter run erased their nine-point lead.

Clift had 26 points in 26 minutes to lead the team and was the only Lady Eagle in double figures.

Both Shelton and senior Hope Dawkins posted six points and five rebounds in 25 and 26 minutes, respectively.

Oklahoma Christian shot 21.1 percent from three-point range and were outrebounded 45-39.

Both teams held their official home opener against the University of Central Oklahoma Nov. 14. The women lost 67-61 and the men fell 85-74.
