Eagles take Newman series 3-1

In the opening game of a four-game series against Newman University, the Oklahoma Christian University baseball team hit two homeruns in their 5-4 victory March 9 in Wichita, KS.

The first homerun came in the second inning when senior Kolton Brown recorded two RBI and brought in senior Jake Collins to put the Eagles up 2-0.

Oklahoma Christian added another three runs in the fourth inning when junior Brice Smith scored Brown and Collins on a deep homer to right field.

Senior Mason McAlister (2-2) pitched five innings for the Eagles and recorded the win, striking out three batters before giving up four straight runs as the Jets pulled within 5-4 in the sixth. He was relieved by senior Matthew Fusselman in the sixth.

Collins stepped in during the seventh inning and only allowed one hit as the Eagles held off Newman to take the series lead 1-0. This marked the third save of the season for Collins.

During the second game of the doubleheader, Oklahoma Christian fell behind early and dropped the game 13-4.

Newman scored eight uncontested runs through the first two innings and took an 8-0 lead before senior Kyle Bottger broke the scoreless streak by bringing Smith in to bring Oklahoma Christian within seven, 8-1.

Collins recorded two RBI in the fourth inning, scoring senior Chad Kennedy and sophomore Austin Stokes to bring the score to 11-3. Smith hit a fly ball that was caught in the fourth but was credited the RBI as Garcia scored the Eagle’s last run of the game.

Sophomore Gabe Rodery (1-1) started on the mound for Oklahoma Christian but only pitched 1.2 innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs, while only striking out two batters. Junior Zachary Pape replaced him, pitching less than a full inning before being relieved after giving up four hits and three runs.

Junior Connor Litterell pitched three innings and struck out two batters while giving up four hits.

After splitting the first doubleheader, the Eagles bounced back and took the third game 4-1 March 10.

Junior Garrett Wages scored Collins in the second inning for Oklahoma Christian’s first run of the game. Collins scored again in the fourth when Smith brought him in to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Newman scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth and closed the gap 2-1.

Brown singled in the fifth inning and the fielder fumbled the ball slightly, giving both Kennedy and sophomore Drew Wright time to cross home plate and increase the Eagles lead to 4-1.

Senior Skyler Martin (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up just one run, two hits and striking out six batters. Senior Garett Hill relieved him in the sixth. Then, Collins closed the game pitching for the Eagles to record his fourth save of the season.

In the final game of the series, Oklahoma Christian clinched the series victory with an 8-6 win March 10.

Sophomore Hunter Markwardt, Kennedy and Wright all scored in the first inning to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. Markwardt scored a second time at the top of the second to push the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, with the bases loaded, Kennedy hit a homerun to bring Wages, Collins and Smith across home plate.

Freshman Robbie Suhr (2-0) pitched six innings and gave up nine hits, six runs and had three strike outs. He was relieved by sophomore Conner Fryrear. Hill pitched the final inning for th Eagles and earned the save, which marks his first of the season.

The Eagles will compete March 16-17 when they host a set of doubleheaders against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Start times are 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. March 16 and 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. March 17.
