Intramural Update: Lambda drives to the top while Delta goes two steps forward, one step back

Lambda Chi Zeta maintained their victory over Gamma Rho after beating them in both the A and B leagues. Olivia and Sydney Hampton, have taken the A league by storm, as they both played crucial roles in the double-overtime showdown. Gamma was once again struggling with the flu that has hit the state of Oklahoma, so it will not be until playoffs before fans have the chance of seeing Gamma at full strength. Meanwhile the freshmen picked up another win against Theta Theta Theta, locking in the playoff matchups in the A league as Follows:

Lambda vs Theta

Freshmen vs Gamma

Over on the guys side, Delta has found their groove, scoring wins over Kappa B and C. An adjusted B team roster now starring Alyx Logan provides extra legs to the smaller roster, and Logan fits into the team perfectly. A loss to the freshmen in the A league does put them back a step, and opens the door for the freshmen to attempt a run. If Delta has a lot of work to do in order to get back in the race for all sports, the freshmen class needs to pull off a miracle.

Women’s Intramural Athlete of the week: Sydney Hampton (Lambda Chi Zeta)

From leading Lambda in points scored against Gamma to defending one of Gamma’s top scorers, Hampton can truly do it all. Spending most of the game against Gamma’s Natalie Smith resulted in Hampton limiting Smith’s scoring in the second half. Her adaptability and  shot versatility create a basketball star that Lambda will be looking at come playoff time.

First Runner-Up: Natalie Smith (Gamma Rho)

For most of the first half it looked like Lambda was going to win the game comfortably, especially with Gamma missing multiple players. However,  Natalie Smith took it upon herself to bring Gamma back into the mix. The senior led the game in points bringing Gamma back into the mix before halftime. Her defensive presence and ability to win rebound after rebound shows that Gamma has more than a capable squad. If Smith can do all of this with a limited roster, time can only tell what will happen once Gamma is at full strength once again.

Second Runner-Up: Carlye Ornellas (Beta Beta Sigma)

A B teamer who  can score over 20 points is a rare sight in intramurals, but Carlye Ornellas is not a common basketball player. While playoffs are still a ways to go, Ornellas has put in the work and should make Beta a team to watch come semifinals.

Men’s Intramural Athlete of the Week:Ethan Rivera (Delta Gamma Sigma)

One of the key players in the Delta offense, Ethan Rivera combines working the ball up and down the court with fine shooting and ball handling. Rivera fights for rebounds, shakes off defenders, and is a threat whenever he holds the ball. The sophomore point guard will be a key focus point in Delta’s climb back to all sports.

First Runner-Up: Jonah Veit (Kappa Sigma Tau)

After missing the season opener against Chi, Jonah Veit was in full force against Delta, using his ball handling, field awareness, and passing skills to create looks for both himself and his teammates. Veit has a tough matchup against the freshmen coming up, but he will play a crucial role in keeping Kappa competitive.

Second Runner-Up: Ryan Chacon (Delta Gamma Sigma)

After a slow start against the freshman, Ryan Chacon has taken the C league by storm. From rebounds to layups to draining threes,  the prodigy has found fine form in the last couple games, something that Delta will be relying on in the upcoming game against Chi.
