Weekly Intramural Update: Chi and Theta begin the long climb back into the all sports picture

Theta Theta Theta and Chi Lambda Phi both ended the softball season with zero points in the all sports rankings, but in the football season so far, they have put down the best performances in their respective divisions.

Chi football is incredible so far. Receivers appear to get open at will, with quarterbacks who can avoid pressure like it is nothing and a defense which can suffocate opposing offenses. Delta Gamma Sigma is also off to a comfortable start in both the A and B leagues thanks to star talent and deep rosters. Meanwhile, Kappa Sigma Tau has struggled initially, only taking a win over Alpha Gamma Sigma. The freshmen face similar struggles, despite playing close games.

In the women’s division, Gamma Rho knocked the socks off of Lambda Chi Zeta, only to turn around and be defeated by Theta. All three teams have elite rosters, but Theta is only the club to have results thus far. The freshmen, on the other hand, suffered some tough losses to Lambda and Theta, leaving some questions as to if they can reach the successes they had during the softball season again.

Looking ahead:

Tonight’s games will feature a clash of titans, with Delta facing off against Chi in a B league game at 9 p.m. and then an A league game at 10 p.m. These games are shaping up to be the preview of the championships later down the road. Kappa B will face off against the freshmen at 7 p.m., and then their A teams will duke it out at 8 p.m. for playoff seeding. Tuesday, Oct. 8 will feature an A league game between Lambda and Theta, where Theta will fight to take the one seed going into playoffs.

Intramural Athletes of the Week

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Holland Reece (Theta Theta Theta)

Taking her soccer skills and using them for a different kind of football, Reece was simply unstoppable in the game against Gamma. Her agility is off the charts and could not be stopped. Expect Reece to keep being a primary threat for Theta athletics moving forward.

First Runner Up: Addie Neal (Gamma Rho)

Neal was a threatening enough quarterback when playing against Lambda. Then starting quarterback, Natalie Smith, showed up, and Neal became a wide receiver and blew through Lambda’s offense with deep route after deep route. Neal’s speed and size is a dangerous combination, and paired with Gamma’s offense, proves the club is not out of this season just yet.

Second Runner Up: Olivia Hampton (Lambda Chi Zeta)

Hampton’s threat as a scrambling quarterback was a problem for the freshmen defense, and Gamma also struggled to contain her at times. Her accuracy was incredible, even if her receivers had a tendency to drop the ball. Still, Hampton has the chance to take over the league as one of the best quarterbacks in the intramurals.

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Cole Klaassen (Chi Lambda Phi)

Athletes can put in hours at the gym working on increasing their strength. They can run for miles to improve their stamina or speed. But you cannot teach height, something Klaassen showed this last week. The lanky senior was everywhere, shutting down receivers and picking off the ball with ease. If that was not enough, his ability as a kicker has made Chi’s life easier as their defense now has more space to work. If Chi can get back at Delta for the loss in softball, expect Klaassen to be leading the charge.

First Runner Up: Hunter Jones (Delta Gamma Sigma)

Field general quarterbacks come with great field awareness and instinct on which target to hit, but Jones’ ability with the long ball makes him one of the most fearsome quarterbacks in the league. His throwing power and accuracy is top notch, and combined with Delta’s B team offense, he could be unstoppable this year.

Second Runner Up: Cannon Poore (Chi Lambda Phi)

Poore’s agility might make him the toughest quarterback to sack in the league. His shiftiness in the pocket is top notch and allows him to puncture holes in defenses easily when combined with his accuracy. It is hard to say which side of Poore Delta will want to prioritize in tonight’s game, as both are equally threatening.
