Weekly intramural update: Lambda takes the lead while Chi storms the court

The spring semester intramurals started off hot, with a mixture of blowouts, overtime thrillers, and a lead change in the women’s division. Here is an update on the season’s wins, losses, and star players..

Men’s

Defending A league champions Kappa Sigma Tau would probably have preferred a more comfortable win over the freshmen, given that their victory came down to a missed free throw. But a win is a win, and the team showed it has more than enough raw talent to compete and overcome. Nick Gimotty and Cade Berkey drain the threes, Brayden Olson and Jake Hergert drive towards the hoop, and Buddy Lambert effortlessly plays all positions.

The bad news for Delta Gamma Sigma is that they lost to Chi Lambda Phi. The good news however, is that rather than rallying too little too late to lose 10 plus, they found their run sooner and had the chance to make it a one point game. Still work to be done, and the B and C teams losing to the freshmen does not help. But all is not lost yet. The additions of Teagen Henson, Cole Osburn, and Wilson Rankin add much needed life to Delta A basketball, a team that in the last few years has not been in contention for the title.

The strongest club this season is Chi, who is currently undefeated. The A team had their own struggles, but got the job done against Delta. Meanwhile the B and C teams each dispatched Kappa with relative ease. Each Chi team possesses height, athleticism, shooting prowess, and field awareness that  enables Chi’s basketball sweep. A first place finish in the free throw competition only further extends the all sports lead.

Women’s

After a blowout win over Theta Theta Theta in both A and B leagues to kick off the season, Gamma Rho is poised to cruise through the season. That was until the freshmen came along. After a 10-14 loss in the B league, the A team forced overtime. Coached by Lambda Chi Zeta athletic director Olivia Hampton the freshmen squad starring Madi Mannering, Teagan Cain, and Jaylee Wills to name a few took their time before taking the lead and forcing a turnover to end the game 27-25.

While the freshmen are ready to play now, it took a 15-32 loss to Lambda to get them warmed up. The Hampton girls are back and better than ever and ready to make another run. With first place finishes over Gamma in the free throw competition and the swim meet, Lambda pushes ahead by mere points. The result is less than ideal for Gamma, as star swimmer Mary-Natalie Young could not compete due to illness this year. But with two A leagues still in competition, a B league, and a handful of individual sports left to go, the all sports title is  still in contention.

Women’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Hannah Day (Lambda Chi Zeta)

Finishing in the top six in every event is impressive enough, but winning multiple events is what put Day over the top. The former collegiate swimmer was able to take her talents to the intramurals last night, and it showed. Day’s performance alone would have earned a third place team finish overall, and the early lead Day scored for Lambda is what was key to Lambda holding onto the lead in the end.

First Runner-Up: Madison Owens (Gamma Rho)

For a while it looked like Lambda would place first in every event, however Madison Owen had other plans. Owens won the 50 and 100 freestyle, using her mix of speed and endurance to outlast the competition. Her anchor leg in the relay held onto the lead that put Gamma in striking range.

Second Runner-Up: Megan Arendse

Placing second in several events and being the only person to beat Hannah Day in a 25 meter event, Arendse’s work is what truly allowed Lambda to separate from the pack early on. By giving Lambda the second place points alongside the first place victory allowed Lambda to outscore Gamma in all but 3 events. Her work as the leadoff leg in the relay also allowed Lambda to put pressure on Gamma early on in the event.

Men’s Intramural Athlete: Landon Parker (Chi Lambda Phi)

Going from the team’s sole shooter to a roster stacked with shooters can be a difficult switch. But Parker adjusted with ease, helping command Chi’s offense to a win over Delta. Combining his ball handling with his shooting prowess and field awareness shows his ability to adjust on the fly.

First Runner-Up: Connor Hill (Chi Lambda Phi)

Using his height and verticality to threaten teams in the paint, Hill dominated in Chi B’s season opener against Kappa. Using his size to drive before either finishing with a bucket or passing to his teammates led to the blowout win. Having already won one B league as a freshmen, Hill is poised to make another bracket run this February.

Second Runner-Up: Jack Brookshire (Delta Gamma Sigma)

Delta has few wins on the basketball court, but that did not stop Jack Brookshire from stepping up defensively. Brookshire’s reflexes and explosiveness allowed him to stay tight on shooters and allow Delta to make a late game run. Brookshire’s defensive efforts are on full display, giving Delta everything they need to turn their losses into victories.
