Women’s Intramural Update: Controversy in the women’s final?

The women’s final between Lambda Chi Zeta and the freshmen class was an intense story of gritting teeth, resilience and an extra innings run to complete the comeback. But is this story also about cheating?

The game started as most games have for Lambda, with strong batting from Maddy Gauthier, Anna Strother and Olivia Hampton, to name a few. With the freshmen floundering, the class needed an answer, and they needed it soon. Slowly but surely, they chiseled away at the lead while foiling Lambda’s high-flying offense before forcing extra innings and taking the game.

But as the freshmen slowly crawled back, it felt like the same players kept going up to bat without the same players batting before them. No comment was made from the freshmen coaches on this matter, but the allegations led Rick Judd to split the first and second place bonuses between the two teams. Both teams gained 85 points from the final, leaving the all sports score as this:

First: Lambda Chi Zeta (125)

Second: Freshmen Class (105)

Tied-Third: Gamma Rho and Upperclassmen (50)

Tied-fifth: Theta Theta Theta, Iota Kappa Phi, Beta Beta Sigma (0)

The weather delays seem to have cost Gamma third place, as several players were at a Hozier concert during their consolation match. Mattie Baird for Lambda was among the concert goers, limiting their success as well. While there are still plenty of intramurals yet to be played, the historically dominant Gamma will be starting from behind and has some work to do if they want to get back in this.

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Jaylee Wills (Freshmen Class)

Although a controversy surrounds star players batting too often, Wills was normally found pitching, not at bat. So when she stepped up to plate in the bottom of the eighth, anticipation was in the air. However, Wills did not disappoint, finding the gap in the outfield to end the game with a walk-off home run. Heading into the football season, keep an eye out for Jaylee Wills.

First Runner Up: Sian Loveless (Freshmen Class)

Sure, players may have been batting more than they should in the final, but Loveless was a defensive stallworth who rivaled the best shortstops the intramural scene has seen all year. Loveless’ defense helped limit the success of Lambda’s batting and allowed the freshmen to still be in the game by the end. Lightning quick reflexes backed by an incredible arm, Loveless is a force on the intramural field. It is simply a matter of time to see if her skills can translate over to the rest of the intramural sports lineup.

Second Runner Up: Anna Shirey (Freshmen Class)

Once again, another story of potential controversy is still backed by the freshmen class. But if you see a former softball star sprint to the same part of the outfield multiple times and do not reposition to cover her, then you are going to find yourself giving up some runs. While Shirey may have been given more opportunities then she was owed in the final, her batting prowess backed by her fielding skills and determination after taking a hard head injury during semifinals shows how quit is just not a word in her vocabulary.
