Lady Eagles softball dominates Falcons

The Lady Eagles opened up conference play with a three-game sweep of the University of Texas Permian-Basin this weekend.

Sheridan Bond said she thought the conference atmosphere was key to the way the team played last weekend.

“Conference is always a really fun environment and I thought we really stepped up to the plate and got the job done when we needed to,” Bond said.

The first of the three-game series came in an 8-0 victory behind Madison Hagood’s complete game shutout. Haley Squier knocked a two-run double to begin the scoring for the Lady Eagles.

Niki Davidson and Alexus Vanlandingham each hit homeruns as well. This was Vanlandingham’s first career homerun. Jordan Chism added two hits and an RBI as well to aid in the 8-0 victory to begin the series.

Oklahoma Christian University’s second game of the doubleheader started with an 11-3 in the first five innings.

Bond’s two-run single in the fifth inning capped off a seven-run inning to bring the score to 11-3. Kaylie Upton finished off her complete game, shutting out the Falcons to seal the victory.

In the third game, Bond tripled in the top of the eighth inning to break the 5-5 tie and spark a three-run eighth inning, to give the Lady Eagles the 8-5 lead.

Hagood threw the last 5 1/3 innings and held the Falcons in the last half inning to seal off the weekend sweep.

Bond went 2-4 in this game, with four runs scored and an RBI and Avery Walker was 3-5 with 2 RBIs to aid the victory.

Bond said that she was happy to see the team come together to win its first conference series.

“I thought we really showed a great team effort this weekend,” Bond said. “Every single person was involved and played a huge role in what we accomplished.”

The Lady Eagles will host Pittsburg State University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, starting at 2 p.m.
