Men’s Intramural Update: Kappa survives and Upperclassmen thrive

Recent results in the intramural softball season are majorly impacting the race for all sports.

Kicking things off, the men of Kappa Sigma Tau notched another win under their belts, beating Chi Lambda Phi 20-9. The hitting prowess of Braydon Olson backed by the defensive efforts of Sam Hegemen were simply too much; Kappa went up 9-0 in the first inning and never looked back.

This win puts Kappa in the fourth seed during the playoffs and gives them a minimum of 20 bonus points for their finish. As for Chi, their lack of playoff presence will give them time to brush up on their flag football skills in anticipation for the next season. This year unfortunately marks the club’s first ever elimination from playoff contention in softball on record.

Following Kappa’s win, the upperclassmen edged out a 13-10 victory against Delta. In a similar fashion to their loss against Kappa, Delta came out slow and made plays late, which cost them in the end. Ryan Chacon worked to keep Delta in the game, but the combined efforts of Landon Parker, Cannon Poore, and Jack Brookshire were simply too much. The upperclassmen finish the season with an undefeated record, and will play the freshmen in semifinals.

This Sunday, September 22nd, will be playoff night for softball. At 7:30pm the upperclassmen will play the freshmen, followed by Delta vs Kappa at 8:30.

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Brayden Olson (Kappa Sigma Tau)

A standout batter for Kappa, Olson picked apart Chi’s defense with ease, while simultaneously turning around and captaining Kappa’s outfield. Olson is not a man to test on either side of the plate, expect him to step up again for Kappa this Sunday.

First Runner Up: Jack Brookshire (Upperclassmen)

The upperclassmen infield is a tough nut to crack, thanks in part to Brookshire. The 2nd basemen seemed to be making play after play on defense, before picking up a bat and challenging teams to stop his hitting. Thanks to Brookshire’s efforts the upperclassmen are undefeated, and if he can maintain this level of talent expect the upperclassmen to stay undefeated.

Second Runner Up: Sam Hegeman (Kappa Sigma Tau)

Leading the infield for Kappa, Hegeman is a force to be reckoned with. His quick reflexes and excellent agility give him the perfect build to play shortstop, and his leadership efforts do not stop there; Hegeman also helped coach the freshmen team into a playoff berth as well. Despite both Kappa and freshmen going into their semifinal matchups as underdogs, expect Hegeman to keep those teams in the game until the very end.
