Playing into the New Year

For the majority of Oklahoma Christian University students, Christmas break was a relaxing and calm time used to unwind. However, the break was a time of competition for the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, both teams played against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith at home. The women’s team won 74-63. The men’s team also beat Arkansas-Fort Smith 69-61.

The Eagles continued their campaign throughout winter break against West Texas A&M on Thursday, Dec. 19 and against Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The men’s team lost the first game to West Texas A&M 81-65. The Eagles’ put up a good fight against Eastern New Mexico, but it was not enough to hold New Mexico off, as they defeated the Eagles 81-66. The women’s team also fell to both teams, with West Texas A&M winning 76-37 and Eastern New Mexico beating the Lady Eagles 80-69.

Both the men’s and women’s teams concluded their holiday competition with games against St. Edward’s University on Thursday, Jan. 2, and St. Mary’s University on Saturday, Jan. 4. The men’s team lost to St. Edward’s 69-59 at St. Edwards. Two days later, the men’s team took St. Mary’s to overtime and won 70-60. The Lady Eagles lost to St. Edward’s 79-66 and St. Mary’s 79-47.

To start the new year the women’s team record is 3-8, with all wins coming from teams in the conference. The men’s team record is 4-7, also with three wins against other conference teams.
