Track women finish fourth, men 10th at Friends University

Despite heavy winds, both Oklahoma Christian University track teams placed in the Friends University Invitational in Wichita, Kansas on Friday and Saturday.

The women’s team placed fourth out of 19 teams, while the men’s team took 10th out of 16 teams.

Freshman Leisa VanVooren finished third in the 400-meter run with a time of 59.76 seconds. Joined by teammates Maci Rich, Heather Jones and Tara Lewis, the four placed fourth in the 4×400-meter run, with a time of 4:20.72.

“Our team did really well this weekend despite the windy conditions,” VanVooren said. “Our 4×400 ran a lot better than a lot of people expected us to.”

Rich also placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.50 and Christina Kaelin ran it in 2:54.55. Jones finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and Kayla Parker placed ninth in the 200-meter run. Layne Hammer, Sarah Cobb and Katie Jones took fifth, sixth and eighth in the 5000-meter run, respectively.

In the field events, Alexus Woolly recorded a throw of 119 feet, 1/4 inch in the discus while Miranda Ostlund threw 121 feet, 3 inches in the javelin and 138 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the hammer.

“Overall, it was a solid weekend and I think we’re all looking forward to our upcoming big meets,” VanVooren said.

For the Eagles, Landon Huslig finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.09 seconds. Bryant Keirns (32:15.00), Jake Weight (33:21.64) and Ben Reed (34:26.16) placed fifth, eighth and 10th in the 10,000-meter run, respectively.

Grant Smith took 10th in the 200-meter run with his time of 22.61 seconds and Austin Davis ran 23.41 seconds in the same event. Evan Durrill (15:51.06) finished fifth in the 5000-meter run, followed by Blake Thompson at 16:06.22, Trevor Talley with 16:04.95 and Head Coach Wade Miller, running attached, at 16:13.94, placing him 19th in the 40-man field.

The Oklahoma Christian track teams will travel to the K.T. Woodman Invitational in Kansas City, Missouri on Friday and Saturday to compete at Cessna Stadium.
