With the start of volleyball finally here, there is plenty of excitement surrounding the final sport of the fall semester. Volleyball is one of the last opportunities for clubs to earn points before the semester comes to an end, and with the standings being as close as they are, this season could make a big difference for everyone.
With the first volleyball games getting started this week, there is no doubt that this will be an important sport for every club. On the men’s side, Kappa Sigma Tau currently holds the lead in the all-sports standings. However, both Freshmen and Delta Gamma Sigma are close enough to take over first place if they can pull together a strong volleyball season and win the championship. With so few points separating the top clubs, every game could make a difference in where teams finish.
Chi Lambda Phi,historically one of the stronger volleyball clubs, will need to carry that strength over into this season. Currently sitting in fourth place overall in the men’s all-sports standings, Chi is not out of the race by any means. However, they have some ground to make up if they want a chance at moving back toward the top. A strong volleyball season could be exactly what they need to make that happen. For Delta, this is also a big opportunity to close the gap on Kappa and potentially finish the semester in first place.
The women’s standings are in a very different position heading into the season. Gamma Rho currently holds first place in the women’s all-sports standings, but only by one point, with Lambda Chi Zeta sitting right behind them. With such a small gap between the two clubs, volleyball could be the deciding factor as to which team finishes the semester on top. Both clubs will need to stay competitive throughout the season because one championship or even a few important wins could be enough to change the standings.
As for the other women’s clubs, the road to first place is looking a little more difficult. While some teams may be further behind in the standings, there is still an opportunity to make a run if they secure a strong season. Volleyball has a way of changing things quickly, and a team that gets hot at the right time could surprise everyone.
While volleyball might not be everyone’s favorite sport, it is definitely one that every club needs. With the first semester coming to a close, this is the final chance for teams to hold onto their leads, make up ground, or take over a new spot in the standings. Whether it is Kappa trying to defend its lead, Chi and Delta looking to make a comeback, or Gamma and Lambda fighting for the top spot on the women’s side, there is plenty on the line this season. By the time the final games are played, the all-sports standings could be changed drastically.
