Women’s Intramural Update: Freshmen bounce back while Upperclassman and Gamma falter

An early exit this year for Theta Theta Theta, as they failed to win over the Freshmen class. The team kept it close until the very end thanks to the efforts of Maddie Harrison and Allie Neilson, but could not finish the game. The freshmen took the win as a start of something new, as they went on to defeat a solid upperclassmen team. Freshmen coaches Mary Ellen Stolte and Mattie Baird offered no comments on who stood out for the team.

After a couple back and forth results, the upperclassmen have their work set out for them. The win over Theta showed good promise but the team has yet to  replicate their success. The squad of Sydney Hampton, Madeline Dimmit, and Addie Neal have their work cut out for them this year.

Ending off the regular season was supposed to be an all out brawl for the one seed. Instead, a stout Lambda defense stomped on Gamma winning 13-1, and only allowing that one run at the second to last at bat the entire game. Lambda played a near perfect game, backed up by the duo of Mattie Baird and Maddy Gauthier. The roster is filled out with top notch athletes like Anna Strother, Kayedence Bruner, and Olivia Hampton. If they maintain this kind of performance in the playoffs, expect Lambda to win it all.

As for Gamma, there is work to do. Gamma is no stranger to losing in the regular season only to bounce back and win it all in the playoffs, but it will be a team effort. And this year is not a year to play around with teams as they have learned. From the top notch talent to a full roster deep with depth to a massive sideline that has sometimes cheered Gamma to victory, Gamma is not an underdog this year.

Looking ahead, playoffs will be this Sunday, September 22. Gamma will play the freshmen at 7:30 PM, followed by Lambda vs the upperclassmen at 8:30 PM. The women’s final will be played on Monday September 23rd at 9:00 PM.

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Mattie Baird (Lambda Chi Zeta)

Simply put, Baird is an all around athlete. Her leadership on and off the field backed up by her speed, agility, and strength is simply unstoppable. She has a team that backs her up and the skills to take them far. Baird will be a factor teams need to take into account if they want to progress further into the playoffs.

First Runner Up: Maddy Gauthier (Lambda Chi Zeta)

If having an elite shortstop was not scary enough, Lambda possesses an incredible 3rd baseman in Maddy Gauthier. Gauthier’s raw strength allows her to make plays at first other infielders in this league simply do not possess. And if her strength was a tough enough matchup for baserunners, wait for when she gets to bat. Gauthier is no stranger to making the finals, and it is only a matter of time before she wins it.

Second Runner Up: Allie Neilson (Theta Theta Theta)

Simply put, softball is a team sport. You cannot win with just one player. But it appears  nobody told Allie Neilson that and it showed. Neilson played with passion, skill, and a grit which seemed to will Theta into games even at the very end. Make no mistake, Neilson’s softball run may be over, but her run for intramural athlete of the year is only beginning.
