Women’s Intramural Update: Gamma holds all sports lead while Theta sweeps individual sports

The last of the fall intramurals are over, but the race for all sports is only just beginning. From volleyball playoffs to ping pong singles, every point counts, and while some clubs have learned that, others have not.

In the women’s division, ping pong singles showcased some exciting matches. After a bracket with top contenders falling as early as the quarter finals, Theta’s Raquel Fanelli combined power, positioning and control to secure victory. This is the third of three individual sports which Theta has had a champion in, allowing them to hold onto third place in the all sports rankings.

The volleyball B league featured intense competition with multiple contenders. Gamma finished the regular season undefeated, forcing Lambda to face a tough freshmen squad for a spot in the finals. But the extra test forced Lambda to play from behind, which would prove pivotal in their eventual upset over Gamma in the finals. Lambda’s serving consistency and the squad of Maddy Gauthier, Mattie Baird and Sadie Vrooman, amongst others, assisted in the win.

The A league volleyball semifinals fared similarly, with Lambda and Gamma defeating the freshmen and Theta, respectively, with relative ease. The final would offer another upset, however, as Gamma defeated Lambda in the first two sets. A near-perfect game for Gamma, the club combined great placement, defensive positioning and blocks to best Lambda.

Intramural Athlete of the Week: Raygan Sinclair (Gamma Rho)

Between  hitting past Lambda’s tall blockers or digging up their spikes, Sinclair did it all. By starting off on the outside and pressuring Lambda’s defense until they made a mistake, Sinclair could then rotate to the back row positions to set her teammates up for success. Her talents and strategy was key in winning the championship and taking the lead, and her ability to adjust positions as needed makes her one of the best players in recent intramural history.

First Runner Up: Anna Strother (Lambda Chi Zeta)

Strother’s outside hitting is something few have been able to replicate, and her power and positioning have boosted Lambda’s offense for the last two years. Strother would dominate at the net and then turn around with powerful serve after powerful serve to put pressure on opposing teams early on. While she may not have won this time around, Strother can leave knowing other clubs’ relief at no longer having to defend against her impressive offense.

Second Runner Up: Heather Sparks (Gamma Rho) Gamma’s defense did an excellent job contesting Lambda’s attack, but the key behind it all was libero Heather Sparks. Sparks threw her body around the court to keep the ball in play, and her accuracy while passing allowed Gamma to immediately counterattack. Sparks is a player who will be sorely missed by Gamma, and her skill as a libero will be hard to replace in future years.
