Lady Eagles to honor military, first responders prior to Tuesday’s games

Oklahoma Christian University’s softball team will honor military members and first responders prior to the games against Texas Woman’s University tonight.

According to Assistant Head Softball Coach Jessica Ruckman, the Lady Eagles were inspired to host a military/first responders appreciation day after another one of their appreciation programs in the past.

“The softball players from last year showed a huge interest in the faculty/staff day and really wanted to do that this season,” Ruckman said. “Our coaching staff looked at this as an opportunity to honor and support many others as well this season.”

Ruckman said many Oklahoma Christian softball coaches and players have close connections with first responders, which made the military/first responders appreciation day feel appropriate.

“One of our coaches on staff served in the military and each of us has a relative that has served as well as other family members that currently serve as first responders,” Ruckman said. “We also have players with family members and friends that are members of the military and first responders so we all understand the importance and sacrifice these men and women make on a daily basis.”

According to Ruckman, the Oklahoma Christian softball program finds it very important to show support to first responders and honor those who protect American citizens every day around the campus, community and nation.

All military members and first responders in attendance will be invited to join the Lady Eagles on the field before the first game for the National Anthem.

“Although [today’s] event is going to be short, we hope this small gesture will show how thankful Oklahoma Christian softball is to so many people fighting for and supporting us so that we get to do what we love every day,” Ruckman said.

The Lady Eagles will host Texas Woman’s today at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Tom Heath Field.
