Pokemon GO: The Resurgence of the Decade

In 2016, an unexpected game took the world by storm, invading college campuses all over the United States, and bringing back the joy of walking. Now, ten years later, Pokemon GO has returned to Oklahoma Christian University’s campus stronger than ever.

Pokemon GO was created around a simple concept- get people to go outside and be more active. The game revolves around the player walking to “find” pokemon on a digital map that uses GPS software to pinpoint their real location. Players can catch these pokemon and collect them. The game encourages players to walk to earn candies and level up their pokemon.

Aiden Paul, a student at Oklahoma Christian, is a part of the “Edmond GO! Adventures” through the Campfire app, which meets Wednesday 6-7 p.m. at Stephenson Park.

“Edmond GO! Adventures is more than just a Pokémon GO group. It’s a community of friends, explorers and trainers who come together through a shared love of adventure. What starts as meeting up for raids, Community Days and special events often grows into lasting friendships and unforgettable memories,” Paul said, “…Pokémon GO isn’t just about catching Pokémon. For me, it’s been about getting outside, staying active, and finding joy in everyday life. The game encourages players to walk, explore and engage with the world around them.”

Pokemon GO can be played by anyone. Students as well as their parents, siblings or even grandparents can download the game to try out for themselves. The game’s community stretches beyond Oklahoma Christian and into the broader local community. Hundreds of people will show up to local events in Edmond to catch pokemon or battle.

“Although it’s lost some appeal since it first came out of ‘Pokemon in the real world,’ it’s still a way to pass time and have a community with others, while also having a competitive outlet,” Alex Scrimsher, a student at Oklahoma Christian explained. “It’s like having a lens of truth, just through your phone instead of a magnifying glass.”

Pokemon GO players are dedicated to keeping the game fun through an engaging community and a variety of events. The game is a fun time for anyone who is wanting to get into it for the first time or download it again after some years of absence.

For anyone who is interested in downloading Pokemon GO, all they need to do is go onto their app store. They can also download the Campfire app, which was created by the developers of Pokemon GO, to join in on community events within the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
