When people think of Star Wars, they immediately think of the spectacle movies such as “Revenge of the Sith” and “The Last Jedi.” They also think of the many TV shows released such as “The Clone Wars” or the recent Disney+ show “The Mandalorian.” With that said, Star Wars has had a fair share of games, with its most recent release being is “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.”
Fallen Order is an action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Nov. 15. The game takes place about five years after the events of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” In the game, the player takes control of a former Padawan—Jedi trainee—named Cal Kestis, who is being hunted through the galaxy by the newly formed Galactic Empire’s Inquisitors, a group of Sith trained by Darth Vader himself to hunt and exterminate Jedi.
Cal must explore several planets in order to complete his Jedi training and restore the fallen Jedi Order. Throughout his journey, Cal will visit planets from Star Wars lore such as Kasshyyk, home of the Wookiees, and new planets. Each planet has different enemies to defeat and varies in size, and the player will be forced to travel to each planet to gather upgrades to progress through the game.
The exploration is open, and players can go anywhere at any time. However, the game encourages the player to go towards the objective currently laid out before them. Through the course of the game, Cal will acquire upgrades for both exploration and combat. For his exploration, he will be able to use his Force abilities. The game starts out with giving Cal the Force Slow ability which allows Cal to slow enemies and objects for a short period of time. Once the player starts exploring, they will obtain the Force Pull and Force Push abilities, allowing him to pull and push objects and enemies. However, upgrades are not just limited to Cal. Towards the beginning of the adventure, Cal will encounter a droid named BD-1 who will help Cal explore planets by scanning objects, opening locked doors and allowing Cal to travel through ziplines.
Combat for Cal works similarly to other action-adventure games like Dark Souls. The player will fight enemies from Star Wars lore such as Stormtroopers, but Cal will also face enemies who are natural to each planet. The player is forced into most fights and in most cases has no way of escaping with no consequences. However, the player will acquire upgrades to help defend themselves such as a dual-sided lightsaber, which detaches on both sides for a short dual wielding combo and as mentioned earlier, has Force abilities. Also, BD-1 has one more ability: the droid can heal Cal if he faces danger with a press of a button. With the upgrades, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gives itself a difficult yet fulfilling adventure.
Overall, Fallen Order gives fans of both Star Wars and video games a spectacular single-player experience with a strong cast to tell a dark story while keeping it loyal to the Star Wars lore. The pace never slowed with its energetic platforming and intriguing and diverse puzzles making for an all-around remarkable game.
