Day Six, alumni office present first ‘Adulting 101’ workshop

To kick off the spring semester and raise awareness for the launch of its new brand, Oklahoma Christian University’s Calling and Career Center—now called Day Six—is partnering with the alumni office to present a series of Adulting 101 workshops. Featuring Oklahoma Christian alumni and staff, the first of the Ethos-approved lectures will take place tonight at 6 p.m.

“This first event of our Adulting 101 workshop series, held monthly through April, will give students the opportunity to ask an employer anything, and we mean anything,” Director of Calling and Career Susan Hoover said. “We have four OC alumni of all ages and industries—CFOs and executives to HR recruiters—who have committed to providing students with the answers to questions they’ve always wanted to ask, but have been too afraid to.”

Tonight’s topic of how to get and keep a job will feature a Q&A/panel-style discussion featuring Kevin Lawrence, CFO of BancFirst; Erin Engelke, executive director of Calm Waters; Matt Thomaz, director of talent acquisition of Sonic, and Lacy Keller, area HR manager of Lowe’s.

“This is a rare opportunity for students to have a peek behind the curtain with expert alumni and OC staff before a job might be on the line,” Hoover said. “We hope that students come away with a better understanding of how to get and keep a job, how to manage their social media presence, how to budget to meet personal financial goals and how to understand and select the appropriate benefits when you do get a job.”

Hoover said the workshops are intended to provide students with the “secrets of adulting,” which are not often talked about in the classroom. Throughout the semester, topics will range from social media etiquette and personal finance to selecting employer benefits.

“This series is planned by Day Six and the alumni office, and continues the work the alumni office has done in launching the Adulting 101 workshops in previous years,” Hoover said. “The topics and speakers selected are a direct result of feedback we’ve received from students to give them an insider’s look into how employers make decisions and how they as an employee can excel professionally and personally.”

Tonight’s “Ask an Employer Anything” lecture will take place from 6-7 p.m. in WBC 124. The event is Ethos-approved, with pizza and drinks provided.
