Faculty and Staff Profile: David Lynn

David Lynn is the head golf coach and athletic director at Oklahoma Christian University. He has racked up many awards in his long career as golf coach for Oklahoma Christian, including Heartland Conference Coach of the Year in 2019.

Throughout his career as head golf coach—1999-2008, 2011-present—he has won 69 tournaments, including one NAIA national championship and one NCCAA national championship.

Lynn sat down for an interview with the Talon to discuss his career in athletics.

What first brought you to Oklahoma Christian?

I attended a Church of Christ outside Seattle, WA, where I grew up. I visited most of the Church of Christ schools and picked OC because it felt right and I was offered a track scholarship by then-Coach Randy Heath.

What was your favorite part about being a student here?

I really enjoyed the campus and the people. I always felt like everyone on campus really wanted to help me be successful academically, spiritually and athletically.

What was your major and why?

I got a BSE in education. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn’t want to be in an office from eight to five.

What made you want to work with athletes?

I witnessed my coaches and teachers at OC and was very interested in what they did. I always thought being in a college setting was attractive because it is such an impactful time in life, 18 to 22 years old. Being at OC allows you to be a part of young people’s lives in many different ways.

What’s your favorite part about working with athletes?

I absolutely love to compete. I really enjoy the grind of starting at one point and working to be better as a team and individual and trying to accomplish something special. I love to see our student athletes and the transformation they go through during their time at OC.

What’s the hardest part?

I think the hardest part is letting them make mistakes. Young people need to learn to make important decisions, and as a coach you want to prepare them for every scenario possible. It’s human nature to want to remove obstacles in their path. They need to figure things out with guidance and no two students are the same. That’s a fantastic challenge and is new every day.

What has been your most memorable experience either as a student or faculty member at OC?

My most memorable experience as a student at OC was meeting the most important person in my life, my wife, sophomore year.

My most memorable experience as a coach is winning two national championships. There is something special about being the last team standing at the end. It’s a very satisfying feeling.
