The Student Government Association provided a sweet relief from first-week studies with free Freddy’s Frozen Custard and live music by seniors Nick Thomas and Gage Pabst on Wednesday.

With custard sundaes in hand, students lounged under the Lawson Pavilion on the couches and chairs set up in full view of musicians Thomas and Pabst as they played separate sets for the audience.

Pabst opened the night with an original, soft acoustic song.

“I’ve been songwriting since I was about 10,” Pabst said. “My songs start depressing but when I’m done I’m pretty stoked.”

He said he has grown close to Thomas during his time at college and enjoyed the opportunity to play music with him at the event.

“Me and Nick have been bros since freshmen year,” Pabst said. “We both had metal bands in high school, so we bonded over our metal past.”

Thomas said while he and Pabst are fellow musicians and songwriters, they play different styles of music.

“I’m all about reflective music, music that’s introspective,” Thomas said.

The two said they were nervous but excited to play in front of fellow students, friends and faculty.

“I like this because it’s more intimate, I don’t know if I could handle being more like Hawk Nelson who played here our freshmen year,” Thomas said.

Drew Bellcock, a student attending the event, said the music made the atmosphere pleasant.

“It makes it more casual,” Bellcock said. “This is a great opportunity to socialize and meet other people on our campus.”

The event attracted a large crowd that caused the frozen custard line to extend out of the pavilion and past the student center building towards the library. The seating area was also filled with students within 20 minutes.

SGA Vice President Ben McCoy organized the social event and said it was meant to bring the student body closer and positively impact the freshmen.

“Everyone loves ice cream and I wanted to give a good opportunity to show freshmen that we have talented upperclassmen to play music,” McCoy said. “I remember when I was a freshman the upperclassmen really reached down to me and I just want that for them as well so any opportunity to mix everybody is awesome.”

As the school year progresses, McCoy said SGA is helping fund Friday in the Outfield on Sept. 4 and is coming up with plans for a campus-wide scavenger hunt.

“We are going to be hiding some Neil Arter heads around campus, there’s only going to be about 10 of them but with gift card awards,” McCoy said. “It’ll be on firm paper and colored and there’ll be a map and it’ll be great.”
