Last Friday, Feb. 14 Summit Ministries President, Jeff Myers spoke to the students of Oklahoma Christian University during chapel.
Summit Ministries is a Christian organization dedicated to equipping and supporting young people to embrace God’s truth and champion a biblical worldview. Founded in 1962, Summit Ministries has been at the forefront of Christian apologetics and worldview training for over six decades.
Myers began his talk with his upbringing and the many questions he had that didn’t seem to have any answers.
“I didn’t think my questions were all that unusual. Is there really a God? How do we know what evidence is there? Was the world created, or did it evolve,” Myers said. “Even though I knew the people in church loved me, I thought it just wasn’t for me.”
His parents saw the desperation for answers and sought out to find their own answers to help their son- that’s when they found Summit Ministries.
“My parents saw my wrestling and they had heard about a program where you can go for two weeks to this little town, Manitou Springs, Colorado and for two weeks, they will help you find the answers to all of your tough questions,” Myers said. “Questions about God and about society and about all the different worldviews that you will face.”
After the two short weeks were up, Myers felt he found what he had been looking for. Those two weeks shaped his life and career as he now holds the role as president of Summit Ministries.
“I began to acknowledge not only that Jesus was a good guy and that God really exists, but that he’s, my Lord he’s, my savior,” Myers said. “Now, here we are, all these years later, and I have that privilege to be the president of that ministry.”
Over the years, Summit Ministries has influenced thousands of young Christians. Many of its alumni have gone on to become leaders in various fields, including politics, business, nonprofit work, and church ministry. The organization’s approach focuses on fostering a safe environment for students to ask questions, doubt, and ultimately strengthen their faith.
Marrissa Powell, junior accounting major at Oklahoma Christian, attended this past Summer.
“It was an amazing experience, both for my faith and for my community. I got so close to the OC folks that went along with some of the other students that live halfway across the country,” Powell said. “We’re together in such an intimate environment, sharing all those memories together, the highs and lows.”
Powell was hesitant at first to attend, but with the encouraged of friends Buddy Lambert and Linsey Christian, she attended Summit Ministries this past Summer. She came back with a deeper understanding and a new love for Christ.
“I was a little hesitant, a little skeptical if it’s really meant for us, or if it’s a money grabber but they completely lived up to their words and proved it through their actions and just how intentional they were with the students, their speakers, their schedule,” Powell said. “Everything they did exceeded my expectations, and I can barely put it into words.”
Senior Annie Davis also attended Summit this past Summer as a staff member. She shared what stood out to her and some of her most memorable moments.
“To be around that community for two weeks was not enough. I knew I wanted to apply for staff, not only because I could be with like-hearted peers,” Davis said. “Also, because I would get to spend an entire a Summer at Summit, love students and forming deep friendships, learning from mentors, and growing in my relationship with God.”
Davis strongly encourages all Oklahoma Christian students to take advantage of the opportunity to attend Summit as they are able to attend for free.
“If you are curious about or growing, you should go to Summit. The community is unmatched, questions are answered, and it’s in Colorado,” Davis said.
Summit Ministries helps students strengthen their faith and understand their world from a biblical perspective; it also prepares students to engage in difficult conversations and defend their faith with boldness, humility, and grace.
“If we can understand how Truth really did change everything in the past, then we can more clearly see what we lose in abandoning it and what we could gain by reclaiming it.” -Jeff Myers, Truth Changes Everything.
