Flight Club, an official fan group for Oklahoma Christian University athletics, was founded this year to boost school spirit and encourage involvement with sporting events.

Flight Club is a pop culture reference to Chuck Palahniuk’s book “Fight Club,” with the famous tagline: “The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club.” However, the campus club encourages promotion and support and adapted the tagline: “The first rule of Flight Club is you do talk about Flight Club.”

The club aims to inform the student body about what sporting events are coming up, according to Assistant Basketball Coach Rob McKinzie.

“We want to reach this goal that no one can say, ‘I didn’t know there was a game today’,” McKinzie said.

Sophomores Alex Harlow and Jackson Ross, created Flight Club after regularly attending games in the past that did not have a large fan base.

“It’s fun going to the games and just being crazy,” Ross said.

Their main goal is to simply have fun for Oklahoma Christian sports, Harlow said.

The two friends said attending basketball games became one of their favorite things to do on campus during their freshman year, and they wanted other students to share in their passion.

“[Flight Club] can bridge a gap,” Harlow said. “Students and athletes are seen separately, and this brings us all together.”

The club gained a total of 130 members in their first three days of promotion.

“All of the students who are officers or are running Flight Club are non-student athletes at OC,” McKinzie said. “It’s for these student athletes’ support, so we appreciate student athletes giving back by joining Flight Club, being a part of that and working together.”

When members of the club attend an Oklahoma Christian game, they will gain points that can eventually earn a member a prize or reward. The point system encourages students to continue coming to games.

Members also receive discounts to local restaurants, including Marco’s Pizza and McDonald’s, and 10 percent off all items from the Campus Book Store.

Membership is also open to faculty, staff and alumni, but they are not included in the point system. Sign-ups to join Flight Club will be available at home games throughout this semester.

Initial membership costs $15, which includes the price of a Flight Club T-shirt. Continued membership in following years will cost $10. Flight Club can be followed on social media @OC_FlightClub, where they provide sports updates, discount or prize opportunities and information for members.
