Oklahoma Christian Academy will host a benefit concert for Amy Carnagey, a young mother battling cancer.

The Carnagey family attends Memorial Road Church of Christ and have a child attending Oklahoma Christian Academy.

“[The week of the concert] is our Win Win Week, which is cancer awareness week and we raise money for cancer,” Brandon Tatum, Principal of OCA said. “And we thought to end the week, it would be really neat to give the money to a family that is actually going through cancer.”

Oklahoma Christian University Summer Singers will perform alongside Matt Stansberry and The Romance, a local band. Also performing on that night is musician Erick Alexander and the night’s emcee Lucas Ross.

“Cancer is such a devastating situation for anyone,” Micah Holland, base guitar player for the Summer Singers said. “The toll that it takes on a family is horrible, and so it is always heartbreaking to see a family struggle with cancer. However, it is always very humbling to watch as family and community comes together to help and support each other through their hard times.”

For the Oklahoma Christian Summer Singers, music is the one of the ways they can encourage people going through difficult situations in life.

“Music has had a huge impact on my life,” Holland said. “I have always turned to music in times of loneliness and pain. And I have always found comfort in the emotion of the performers. To me, any chance to help relieve someone’s pain or to bring someone happiness, even for just a few minutes, is such a blessing.”

Tatum said the only way to help people like Amy Carnagey is to show them the love of Christ and support as a community.

“As a Christian, when I see people going through such hard times it is really sad, but I feel like we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” Tatum said. “My prayer for the Carnagey family is that they never feel alone. Sometimes it seems like there is no end to hardship, and in these times just feeling the support of others in your community and the encouragement of family and friends can mean all the difference. So I am praying that the Carnagey’s will always feel like they have the support of everyone around them.”

One way people can show their support for the family is to attend the concert.

“It should be a pretty good show and I wish more people will come to it to show support for the family, including Oklahoma Christian students,” senior Caleb McGaha, the drummer for the Summer Singers, said.

The Summer Singers will play popular songs as well as songs they believe will convey hope, McGaha Said.

“I grew up listening to music and I have been playing drums for over six years now. Music is a big part of my life and I want to use my music to help people who are going through a difficult time in their lives,” McGaha said.

The Carnagey Benefit Concert will be held in Oklahoma Christian’s Hardeman auditorium from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Oct. 11. Tickets are $20 each and all proceeds will go to the family.
