Meet the 2020-2021 Club Presidents

As another school year comes to an end, social clubs are looking forward to their new leadership in the upcoming year.

Clubs met in person before the semester moved online or virtually after spring break to elect new presidents and officers to lead.

The Talon spoke with the new presidents to formally introduce them to the student body.

Alpha Gamma Omega: Andrew Ash

Hometown: Marshalltown, IA

Major: Electrical Engineering

What is your favorite memory with your club?

Creating a rush event that gave alumni, current members and those interested in Alpha the opportunity to gather together and hear stories from the alumni. It was a great time getting to know past, present and future Alpha Knights.

Why did you rush your club?

When I was a freshman, I told myself I would rush the club that took the time to get to know me personally. That spring, a guy from Alpha regularly took time to check up on me and invited me to some game nights. He was genuinely interested in how I was doing, and it meant a lot to me.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

I hope I can continue to increase the connections between our alumni and current members. It has been great seeing them get to know each other. I also hope to see Alpha guys continuing to care for others the way they cared for me.

Chi Lambda Phi: Grayson Boker

Hometown: Edmond, OK

Major: Nursing

What is your favorite memory with your club?

Getting fourth at Spring Sing was a lot of fun.

Why did you rush your club?

Chi [is] a club of secrecy. This characteristic [is] very enticing because in this day and age we broadcast everything we do for others to see, and oftentimes it seems like our sole reason for doing said things is for others to see us doing them. That’s lame. However, Chi did stuff—”Chi stuff”and it was exclusive to that group of guys. That’s special, and I wanted that for myself.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

A lot of beautiful men, on the inside, wearing kilts.

Delta Gamma Sigma: Aaron Parrott

Hometown: Tulsa, OK

Major: Cellular and Molecular Biology

What is your favorite memory with your club?

Making a deal with our Spring Sing directors to have a half-court shot competition to cancel our Spring Sing practices sophomore year.

Why did you rush your club?

I wanted to be around a group of guys that were good at doing things their own way.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

My vision for the club is to continue to showcase our strength and paternal energy as a brotherhood through our strength, dependability and pride of being a Delta Bull. Additionally, my vision is to continue to foster an environment that produces some of the most successful alumni of OC that go out into the world and make a difference.

Gamma Rho: Abby Vollmering

Hometown: Arlington, TX

Major: Nursing

What is your favorite memory with your club?

My favorite memory with Gamma would probably be both rush seasons I have gotten to participate in. There is this feeling of warmth I have when I get to experience the building of new friendships. We get to be silly and have fun and try to make as many new friends as possible.

Why did you rush your club?

I saw so many role models. Gamma is made up of women that work hard. I knew they would push me to be my best in friendships, relationships, in my walk with Christ and in my schoolwork. I saw that they built mutual trust and accountability with each other, and I wanted to grow in that and be a part of it.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

My vision for Gamma Rho this next year is to be silly and work hard for the Lord. I have always seen Gamma as incredibly motivated, and I want to focus our work on Jesus and how to better his kingdom through all of the fun and exciting events and opportunities that the school year holds. We have such a diverse group of women with incredible gifts and talents.

Iota Kappa Phi: Rosie Hagerman

Hometown: Salt Lake City, UT

Major: Family Science/Human Development

What is your favorite memory with your club?

My favorite memory with Iota was during Spring Sing this past year. On Saturday night, we all went into a hallway behind the gym, and alumni came in and spoke to us, and then all of the seniors got up and spoke about their time in Iota. It was so beautiful to see all these different girls say how much Iota meant to them over the years.

Why did you rush your club?

I rushed Iota because I felt so welcomed and loved by everyone. They were all so silly and fun and definitely not afraid to be themselves. They accepted me for who I am and they helped me grow into the person I was truly created to be. I think inclusivity is a beautiful thing and that is one of the things they are built on.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

My vision for Iota this year is to continue to love and support everyone and each other as best we can. Over the past couple of years people have started to become extremely involved and very invested in Iota, and I want to continue to push for lots of participation because that is when we become closer and memories are made. I also want us to never lose our positivity and fun.

Kappa Sigma Tau: Jordan Santos

Hometown: Duncan, OK

Major: Bible/Ministry

What is your favorite memory with your club?

My favorite memory with Kappa is probably earlier this semester. We all got together with a lot of our alumni and we mourned together our loss of Isaac and we shared stories and worshiped God together. We have a lot of fun in Kappa, but that night really emphasized who Kappa is. Not just a brotherhood, but a family. Generations coming together to love each other.

Why did you rush your club?

I knew Kappa was the place where I could be myself and have opportunities to be a leader and be successful. I didn’t know tons of people in the club when I rushed, or even that many of the people I rushed with. There are so many different people in Kappa that come from all over campus, but I’ve met some of my best friends and the coolest people during my time here.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

My vision for Kappa this year is to establish our identity. For the last few years, we’ve just been known as being nice guys, which we are, but we’re more than that. Our goal is to prove ourselves as the respected leaders on campus that we know we can be.

Lambda Chi Zeta: Maislyn Weaver

Hometown: Lamesa, TX

Major: Exercise Science

What should everyone know about Lambda as a revived club?

We really want this to be a place for the girls who don’t have another place. I’m hoping through our activities, devos and service projects, we are reaching out to those girls who might not fit in anywhere else.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

I want to be really centered on Christ and have a good foundation based on God. I want there to be intimate friendships in the club and everyone to feel welcome as soon as they get into [Lambda].

Phi Omega Nu: Ripley Martin

Hometown: West Plains, MO

Major: Electrical Engineering

What is your favorite memory with your club?

Directing our Park Rangers Spring Sing show this past semester is my favorite memory of Phi. It really was an amazing opportunity to not only bring our community together, but the entire OC community together. Also, trees?!

Why did you rush your club?

I felt the strong, tight-knit relationships that Phi has from the very beginning of rush. It’s very easy to develop personal relationships and close bonds with everyone in our club because of our size. I also knew that I could step in, really get involved, and truly make a difference with Phi inside and outside of OC.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

[We are] going to be focused on transparency and showing all of campus who we truly are. With a blank slate coming up this next school year, my vision for Phi is to take the energy showcased in our Spring Sing show and re-establish our place here on campus.

Psi Epsilon: Justin Arbuckle

Theta Theta Theta: Avery Black

Hometown: Oxnard, CA

Major: Nursing

What is your favorite memory with your club?

My favorite memory with my club would be Spring Sing practice and intramural games.

Why did you rush your club?

I rushed Theta because they were different from the other clubs and unique. They genuinely cared about me and wanted to get to know me. Everyone was real, honest and so accepting of who I was.

What is your vision for your club in the upcoming year?

My vision for Theta for this upcoming year is to show everyone who we truly are. I want to showcase how diverse Theta is on the outside but also on the inside.
