Meet the SGA executive candidates

Beginning today after chapel, Oklahoma Christian University students will vote on four Student Government Association (SGA) executive officer positions for the 2019-2020 academic year. These roles include president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. Students may cast their vote between 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. today and tomorrow in the student center.

In order to better educate the student body on this election, the Talon contacted each candidate with questions about themselves and their campaign. Their responses are posted below.

PRESIDENT

Abigail Kent

Major: Public Communication and Leadership and Political Science

Classification: Junior

Hometown: Edmond, OK

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“I am currently the junior class vice president, an SGA senator and was a member of the Philanthropy Committee while it existed last semester. I am also a member of the Campus Spirit Committee and a Flight Club officer.”

Q. Why are you running for president?

“Through my involvement in various SGA committees and student organizations, such as Taking Sides [Chapel] and Young Americans for Freedom, I have been blessed by the resources and opportunities SGA has at its disposal. I desire to integrate the organization of SGA into the daily life of the OC student body, resulting in increased unity, communication and accountability. I want SGA to be a place where the average student feels welcome and empowered, allowing them to be positively impacted, as I have been.”

Seth Parker

Major: Public Relations with a minor in Engineering

Classification: Senior

Hometown: Broken Arrow, OK

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“I’ve been in SGA for two years and have served as the chair of the Endowment and Academic Committees in addition to serving on the Campus Spirit Committee.”

Q. Why are you running for president?

“I have been preparing and planning to be the SGA president ever since I began running last year. I have spent most of the past year trying to find where SGA was needed most on campus and how I can personally help them best. I have also built up relationships and connections all across campus in order to prepare for my candidacy.”

Nash Scott

Major: Public Communication and Leadership and Vocational Ministry

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Yukon, OK

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“I was head of Campus Improvements and sophomore male representative for one year. I also brought Bird scooters here.”

Q. Why are you running for president?

“I love OC. I want to serve OC. I want to help make OC home to everyone that comes past that entrance. I believe I have the drive, the ability and the stamina to seek the best for OC to make it more known in the state and in the nation. I believe that I can live by the words of [President] John deSteiguer, “People over Policy,” and create meaningful change for the people on campus. I believe we can make the campus more unified with the Unify Committee. Lastly, I believe that we can make this a diverse campus that helps portray the image of Christ with student government. We just need the leadership to bring it.”

VICE PRESIDENT

Cole McDonald

Major: Biology

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Belton, TX

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“I have been a residence representative and chair of the Endowment Committee the past two years.”

Q. Why are you running for vice president?

“I am running for VP because I want to help bring issues that students are passionate about to the SGA and really make changes happen. I want to be the personal representative for every student on campus, listening to their requests and using my position for them as individuals.”

Jordan Simmons

Major: Sports Management

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Edmond, OK

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“I have three semesters of SGA experiencetwo as vice president of the freshman class, and one as the department of business representative.”

Q. Why are you running for vice president?

“I’m running to connect the students to the people that represent them and to make the weekends at OC fun.”

TREASURER

Cami Kasberg

Major: Accounting/Finance

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Belton, TX

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

I was Tinius representative for two semesters and also a senator in the Improvements Committee.”

Q. Why are you running for treasurer?

“I am running for treasurer so I can allocate SGA funds to better represent the needs and wants of Oklahoma Christian students. I am eager to take past budgets and reconfigure them to allocate funds in places where students want to see change. I want SGA committees to have enough money to reach their goals and maximize their potential in accomplishing their goals, but I also do not want them to have an excess of money that is not being utilized in the most beneficial way possible. As treasurer, I hope to maximize the budget’s role in creating change for the students at Oklahoma Christian University.”

SECRETARY

Audrey Redfearn

Major: Psychology and Vocational Ministry

Classification: Sophomore

Hometown: Tulsa, OK

Q. What experience do you have in SGA?

“This year I am serving as the female U House representative for SGA. I am fortunate enough to be serving on the Constitution/Rules and Revisions Committee this semester, where I have been able to better familiarize myself with SGA and its functions as a whole.

Q. Why are you running for secretary?

“In my time so far at OC, I have noticed there is a divide across campus. I’ve noticed that divide most between SGA and the student body as a whole. I want to be able to make a difference during my time here, and I feel like the best way to do that is through the SGA. I am running for secretary because I want to help lead OC in the right direction.”
