On-campus Chick-Fil-A and coffee shop bring mixed reactions from student body

Due to the Thrive fundraising initiative, Oklahoma Christian University will roll out the red carpet for two new food and drink additions to campus.

A Chick-Fil-A Express and a coffee shop, ‘The Brew’, will open their doors to students in the fall and spring semesters, respectively.

“Opening a Chick-Fil-A on campus, as well as a coffee shop, is way overdue,” sophomore Sabina Punjabi said. “I do not have a car on campus and I am assuming that others do not, especially foreign exchange students, and that makes it very difficult for them to get off of campus. Opening a coffee shop and Chick-Fil-A will not only gives students more enjoyment on campus, but I think it will also give students more of a reason to stay on campus”.

Having the Chick-Fil-A Express open on campus affects more than just students. The local franchise located at 33rd St. and Broadway Ext. formally accepted Eagle Bucks for Oklahoma Christian students, but as of this school year they no will longer do so.

“I really enjoy going to the Chick-Fil-A at the 33rd and Broadway location just because it is a good way to get off campus and I also get to see some of my favorite workers,” senior Jackson Huddleston said. “I think that putting these places on campus is going to make those areas more crowded, especially the student center, and I don’t like that.”

An online poll shows 47 percent are in favor of the new Chick-Fil-A and coffee shop.

Dedra Porter, the restaurant marketing director at Chick-Fil-A on 33rd and Broadway, said she is “excited” about this new location opening up on campus.

“Oklahoma Christian is a vibrant community that is investing in its future growth,” Porter said. “I believe all of us, as local business owners, can benefit from that growth. We’re excited to see a partnership between two brands that we love so much, we are truly blessed to be a part of such a thriving community.”

The Chick-Fil-A Express, located at the west end of the Gaylord University Center, will open Sept. 12, while The Brew will open in the spring.

Interesting name for the coffee shop. Didn’t we have a coffee shop a few years ago?
