Oklahoma Christian University students can now watch online streams of thousands of videos on any device and engage in personal Bible study at the same time, but it’s not through Netflix.

RightNow Media is a nonprofit organization that hosts an online library of more than 6,000 Bible study videos and now Oklahoma Christian students through the Spiritual Life department have a subscription to it.

Spiritual Life staff members have used material from the site to lead different Bible studies on campus.

“My Bible study started using the videos from ‘The Sacred Search,’” Emily Kurt, spiritual life assistant, said. “Which is really cool because they can watch the videos separately from me and we all can come together and discuss what we thought of the material.”

Kurt leads a variety of small groups and spiritual life activities throughout the week. Specifically, she is using RightNow Media as a resource to lead her closed group Bible study on Tuesday afternoons.

“It is nice for the women to have the ability to go back and re-watch if they need to,” Kurt said. “Before this resource became available, members of the Bible study would have to watch the video one at a time and pass it around to each other. This gives them an opportunity do it on their own and come to the discussion prepared.”

Some view the site as a way to encourage independent studying from home in place of traditional church services. Kurt said it is more of an enhancing service, rather than a replacement for traditional services.

“The Church is important,” Kurt said. “The community thrives off of being around one another when we are all together, and I hope that RightNow media creates an environment to have meaningful conversations on what is offered from renowned, religious speakers and various video series.”

Senior Nehemiah Knox said he believes RightNow Media might be another service Oklahoma Christian is offering that will not be widely used by students.

“Students do not think that far ahead,” Knox said. “Maybe a handful of them will start a Bible study with the provided videos and correspondent material. I feel that most students will not take the time or even notice the emails that are sent regarding RightNow Media. Students will click the delete button like I did.”

Not all students hold the same perspective on the service.

“It makes sense that the students will use RightNow Media – and I certainly hope they do,” sophomore Dylan Schouppe said. “This is going to be good for those people who want to make an investment on their own spiritual lives.”

RightNow Media offers multiple videos from popular figures in Christianity, including comedians, preachers and scholars.

“Tim Keller and Louie Giglio are two of my favorites that I have heard are on RightNow Media, so I am pretty pumped to listen to their podcasts,” Schouppe said.

Spiritual Life has not announced any kudos credit opportunities associated with using RightNow Media at this time.
