SGA considers funding requests

The Student Government Association (SGA) considered funding requests at last night’s Valentine’s Day meeting.

Junior Justin McLeckie presented on behalf of the “Exploring America” history trip to occur shortly after graduation in April. Organized by history professor, Dr. Matt McCook, students will receive one hour of history credit while travelling through sites such as the Martin Luther King Center, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Fort Sumter. These students are requesting $1,750 from SGA to cover the cost of airfare.

Senior Cody Ray Milner presented Alpha Chi’s funding request to attend the Alpha Chi College Honor Society National Conference April 5-8 in Portland, OR. Oklahoma Christian University students from the top 10 percent of their class plan to share academic research and expand their networks. The organization is requesting that SGA covers 47 percent of the cost, which sums to a total of $1,894.15 and $380 per student.

The Spring Sing philanthropy team presented their needs to raise awareness for events and gather assistance from SGA members. This year the group is fundraising for the Down Syndrome Association for Central Oklahoma (DSACO). In addition to a silent auction and alumni events to occur during Spring Sing, the group is also planning an all-star awareness basketball game on Feb. 22 and an Extravaganza on March 10.

SGA Sponsor, Liz McElroy announced that Fight the New Drug, an anti-pornography organization, will meet on Feb. 21 in the Harvey Business Center. The spiritual life committee, healthy living committee, eagles health initiative and the Oklahoma Christian Women’s Association will pass out giveaways to attendees. Students will also receive a kudo for attending.

After hearing the funding requests, SGA will vote and decide if they will provide funds in the following weeks. In other actions, the Spring Sing philanthropy team updated the SGA on their progress, members received Valentine’s Day gift cards and leaders made various announcements about activities on campus.
