Wilson East reopening to students next semester

Construction on Wilson East Hall will end Dec. 7, allowing some Oklahoma Christian University sophomore male students to move into their original housing assignments, according to Residence Life.

Due to the construction, many sophomore males were placed in the apartments while others were relocated to Fails Hall and Warlick Hall.

According to Residence Life, students will have the choice of staying in their current living assignments for the remainder of the school year or moving into Wilson. Students who elect to stay in their current housing will be charged the appropriate amount for their living spaces.

Thank you for your patience while Wilson East was under construction,” Director of Residence Life Candace Bass said in an email to sophomore residents this week. “We just heard from the contractors that the building will reopen on Friday, December 7. We want your Spring Housing assignment to be a good fit. You have two options for your Spring 2019 housing: you can return to Wilson East or you can remain in your current assignment (standard charge will apply).”

Wilson is a quad-style living space, meaning there are four rooms with two people in each room. Apartments consist of two rooms with up to four people living in one apartment.

“I had a quad in Wilson with my teammates and we had it all planned out,” sophomore Caleb Brown said. “When we were split up, we were upset at first, but the nicer and more humane living conditions of the apartments made up for it. Now, I find it unfair for administration to not only ruin original housing plans but also to continue to inconvenience students because of the administration’s poor planning.”

With the semester coming to an end, these students will possibly have to start packing in the near future.

“I don’t like how OC has handled this situation,” sophomore Christian Womack said. “Finals week is in a couple of weeks, with dead week being next week, and I’m not trying to pack everything up and study for finals at the same time. I think OC should have just planned all this better by doing the construction over the summer as opposed to the school year. This isn’t our fault, so I don’t think we should be punished and have to move.”

According to Womack, Oklahoma Christian should allow students to remain in the apartments for the same price as Wilson.

“I feel like they shouldn’t change the price because it wasn’t our faults we had to move into the apartments,” Womack said. “But yes, if it came down to moving or paying full price, I would obviously pay full price, but it wouldn’t be the best option.”
