For many in the Oklahoma Christian University community, the Christmas season doesn’t begin until the Lighting of the Commons.
“We make it part of our advent tradition,” Adjunct Faculty for the Music Department Celeste Dvorak said. “I make an advent calendar and try to put ‘Lighting of the Commons’ and ‘Cocoa and Carols’ on it.”
Lighting of the Commons, Cocoa and Carols and the Holiday Hustle are all a part of Oklahoma Christian’s Christmas festivities known as Winter Wonderland Week.
The sixth annual Christmas event kicked off the season with an unexpected bang. At the lighting, the university put on an unprecedented fireworks display.
In addition to the traditional pictures with Santa, Oklahoma Christian mugs, horse-drawn carriage rides and letters to the troops, this year Soundings, Oklahoma Christian’s creative literary journal, set up a Christmas market to raise money and awareness for the publication.
Cocoa and Carols this year took place at 7 p.m. Dec. 5. Students performed a variety of Christmas music, and the audience was treated to free hot cocoa and cider during intermission in the McIntosh Conservatory.
“We love to bring the kids out and listen to the music and see all the folks we don’t see for a long time,” Dvorak said.
The festivities of this year’s Winter Wonderland will culminate with the fifth-annual Holiday Hustle 5K run on Dec. 7 at 9 a.m.
