A farewell to the OC app

The Oklahoma Christian University iPhone app was a necessity for survival, but now it joins flip phones, pagers and Flappy Bird in technology heaven.

Disclaimer: Android users were never able to use the app, bless their hearts.

Standing in the middle of the Garvey Center at Oklahoma Christian a few days ago, I pulled out my phone, hoping to see how many meals I had remaining in the cafeteria for the week. Naturally, I clicked on the Oklahoma Christian app, only to realize that it was not functioning properly. I quickly found out the app on my phone was not the only one having a dysfunction.

For those new to campus, they will never know all of the joy the app brought us with all of the services it provided. However, for those of us that have been here multiple years, we are aware of how useful the app was to us as students.

The app recorded Chapel skips (may they rest in peace), Eagle Bucks remaining, caf swipes, the infamous Oklahoma Christian directory, along with listings of churches, restaurants and other important sites in the area.

With high-quality updates made to the Ethos app and the MyOC website, I was anticipating significant improvements to be made to the OC app itself. You can imagine my disappointment.

Our generation is very visual, and the world becomes more digitalized every day. The Oklahoma Christian app gave us access to all information regarding our status in different areas of life on campus. Thankfully, the Ethos app keeps track of our spiritual development status while UDining updates their own app and Twitter account to inform us what meals will be served.

Imagine a world – or at least a campus – where all of this information would be available in one simple application.

Will we as students ever see the day where we can access the Oklahoma Christian app and be pleased with what is on our phone screens? Nobody knows. But until then, we can check all standings through web browsers on the MyOC website.

Enjoy heaven, OC app. Tell MySpace that I miss him.
