There are several things that are frightening and annoying about the snow and cold, disregarding the fact the temperature is low, which is just annoying anyway.
First off, let me say that I’ve been involved in two major car accidents since I came to Oklahoma Christian University, and two near-accidents – one recently. I am admittedly paranoid about being in a car with anyone driving. We come to a stoplight and I freak out when the driver doesn’t stop soon enough for my comfort. On the highway I continually check behind us to see if cars are coming up too close. So, ice brings in a whole other issue.
While the big roads are mostly fine now, the byways are covered in snow and ice. In my recent near-accident, my friends and I were coming back from church in a little Chevy. We were driving on a major road when a car came out from a byway, unable to break because of the ice. We swerved out of the way and it missed the back right of the car by inches. If we hadn’t swerved, I would probably be pretty beat up right now because I was sitting behind the passenger seat.
So the ice is pretty mean in regards to breaking. Another thing, it is deceptive. Everyone’s probably heard the term “black ice,” referring to clear ice. This doesn’t only happen on roads, it happens on sidewalks, too. I hate walking on campus because either you walk on the newly scraped sidewalks and slip, or you walk in the snow and get your shoes all wet.
The sidewalks still have moisture on them when they are scraped, so it creates a thin layer of ice that tricks you into a feeling of security, and then you slip. Eventually it will melt, but I just think the ice is mean.
That brings me to another point: I feel bad for the people who have to shovel and scrape all the snow and ice. I would hate shoveling or leaf blowing or scraping snow on the weekends. I would hate it any day, but especially on weekends. That just stinks. Thank you grounds crew!
Another thing I hate about snow and cold is class schedule mix-ups. The syllabus is my friend because most teachers now have a full class schedule on it. I love that. Only one of my teachers at community college did that and I loved her for it. But now that we’ve had snow days, the schedules are all mixed up. This isn’t a huge deal to me since I only have one class that was affected, but several people were.
Lastly, having classes or work on snow days stink because it’s cold, it’s icy and hard to go anywhere. When you finally get inside someplace warm, someone who doesn’t need it opens the automatic doors and sends a cold blast of air by you that is completely unnecessary.
I’m ready for summer.
